today I hooked up my old Sony LaserDisc player to compare some movies on laserdisc and dvd, Im bored. anyway I used the player from 1993-1999 when it went in storage in the closet until today I put in a disc (mint, no flaws) and the player reads it and sets up like normal then fastforwards through the disc and stops this is all it will do, also very grainy picture. anyone have any idea or have had to deal with this on theirs before. I called around and nobody wants to even look at it as its 12 years old and the format is no longer in use. thanks
The laser needs to be calibrated. The trouble is, most repair shops won't have schematics anymore and won't be willing to invest in another one just for one repair. If you are willing to take the time/trouble to get one, someone should fix it for you. Worth it? DL
Do a search on Ebay for "laser disc player" and you can find a bunch of them for a price less than you used to pay for the laser discs.
I scored a Theta Data-III off e-bay for like $400bux a few years ago. Unlike many I have held onto and still enjoy my laserdisc collection. Sometimes I still perfer LD's analog artifacting to DVD's digital compression artifacts, though the DVDs have mostly gotten better as years have gone by. Check e-bay, new players are damn cheap. (get a Pioneer or Theta, etc. based on a hot-rodded Pioneer mechanism. I too had a sony that kicked the bucket.)
ok so its the laser, thanks for the help ill search ebay for a new/used one. it may just be me but, i remember the sound coming from laserdisc having more of a punch, sounding more full than dvd.
i fondly remember my Theta Gen III transport and Data II (balanced) DAC. Both had the Single-Mode Laser connection option, a real advancement for the time. Beware the Gen III transport drawer can get out of alignment, but is easily fixed and Theta is a great company IMHO with excellent customer service. FYI: If anyone wants a sealed (was never for sale to public) THX demo laserdisc lemme know. It was (is?) highly collectable. A GREAT demo disc to show off your system to friends.
