Just had lasik performed yesterday at about 2:30 in the afternoon. I gotta tell ya, this is some amazing technology. My contact prescription was -3.50 and -3.75 before the procedure. When I went in for my check-up this morning, I was seeing at 20/15, and my vision has become even sharper and clearer since then.

I'm seeing better than I thought was actually possible, and it's barely 24 hrs post op!

If you hate contacts/glasses, and have been considering this procedure... it is definitely worth your time to atleast get a consultation about it!

    I got PRK in 1997. I was -5.50 - 5.75. So I was blind as a bat! $4000 and 15 minutes I have seen 20/20 since. Best $4000 I have ever spent. I would of paid $50k if I had to.

If you are thinking about it, just do it.

I'm considering it in the winter. Apparently, they drop the price a little around that time, since less people do it in Dec. I'll have to wait and see, I know that i'm already a good match for it.

I met a couple of people who had it done and were happy. I would rather not hear the Doc explain how they do it though.

    If I'm told before:

    I wouldn't do it.

    If I was told after:

I would punch him and say "YOU DID WHAT TO MY EYE!?" "DO YOU KNOW HOW DANGEROUS LASERS ARE?!

Well, I will say that the procedure does feel bizarre... there's no way to describe the feelings really... but it does seem to be quite safe.

It only took about 4 minutes for me per eye, from start to finish. The lasers were only on for maybe 1 min 20 sec of that time. The rest of it was spent lining up my head so that the eye could be in the correct place.

I had what is called the "custom lasik" done. This means that absolutely no blades touched my eye... it is all done with lasers, and it allows people with slightly thinner corneas to have it done.

Both my parents had it done a few years ago, and my brother is scheduled for having it done on Monday!

My mother had it done and it really is great. I am hoping to do it as soon as I am old enough for a safe procedure (apparently that's 21 or 25 i forgot).

Me thinks that any doctor that drops their prices because of the season cheapens their own profession.

That did seem odd when I read it.

It isn't something I would want to cheap out on.

I'm actually 22. TLC (I place I had mine done) recommends that you be atleast 18 years old.

However, the biggest issue is making sure that your prescription has been stable for atleast 1 year... but the younger you are, the longer it's been stable the better.

Mine had been stable for about 5 years.

Didn't work for me. Did it 7 years ago, was 20/20. Slowly degrading, back to glasses.

But I also have halo's, strobing, other problems. Wish I never did it.

Do you still have those problems? If so, can they be corrected? If not now, perhaps someday? Was there a problem with the procedure or did it just now work?

Still have the problem. My understanding is there is no current way to correct it. But I haven't researched this for the last 4 or so years.

Not sure why, maybe I was unlucky. Or the surgeon sucked that day. I lost complete faith in him when I tried to explain my problems. He essentially blew off my problems, saying he could correct it with a second procedure. Which would cost me more $$.

It sucks bigtime. Night vision is horrible. Worse thing I've ever done. Wish I could undo it. Oh well.

Bah, professionals are in business, period. Sometimes you have to make offers or promotions to ramp up things during slow times. People are buying their kids the GI Joe with the kung fu grip at Christmas, not getting elective eye surgery - it makes sense that to entice them there has to be some incentivizing.

All it says is that they would run too lean if they maintained constant pricing based on seasons. Maybe the really busy clinics can book up and not need to offer discounts or incentives. Maybe most do!

Speaking with an opthalmic surgeon friend the other day and this topic came up (he isn't involved in the corrective vision side) and he commented that he doesn't know of any LASIK surgeons that have had the treatment themselves...

I would love to get rid of my glasses (and my wifes glasses/contacts) but am concerned about issues such as have happened to ski_bum and will put up with glasses for a few more years I think :(

Oh, something else that irks me. I asked many people who had lasik if they had problems. Several said no, but after the surgery when I mentioned my problems they said they had the same problems, maybe to a lessor degree. Shsssh, why didn't you tell me in the beginning???? :(

Every single person that was working in the office that I had mine done had had lasik.

My surgeon was Dr. Tate. He had worked with the original creator of the LASIK technology to actually develop the procedure (this was back in the early 80s). He's also done over 15,000 procedures, and the other doctor that I saw while I was there trusted him with her and her husband's eyes. Dr. Tate himself had the procedure done in the mid-nineties.

Saying there are no lasik surgeons that have done it on themselves is just completely incorrect.

Ski-bum... you may want to go in to a TLC center at some point. There is some new technology that has just come into common use within the past 4 years. If your surgeon was gonna force you to pay more money to fix your problems, I would definitely wonder about the integrity of the doctor.

With the TLC lifetime commitment, as long as I keep up with my post-op appointments, I can get an enhancement done whenever I need it in the future for free...

This technology has not been around long anough for me to trust it.

    After 50 years or so........I would.........but it's what, 10-15 years old ?

No, that didn't come off right. I would never get this done on the cheap either, but as I was explained to by my eye dr., whom I've been using for years and trust very much. The company he recommends everyone to use, I think among the original creators of this technology, lower their pricing during x-mas time, because as I can remember what he said, less people actually have it done around that time.

Apparently it isn't a certain dr. that does this, but in general the whole industry does this. This is what I've been told, I may be wrong.

I've been told the complete opposite. That they prefer you wait until you ar 22, and that your prescription is stable for atleast 4 years before it is done. I'm 22, they've been stable for this length of time, so I'm a good match for the procedure.

My sister had it done. She had to go in to get some scar tissue SCRAPED off her eyeballs after a few weeks, her night vision is shot, and she still has to wear glasses every once in a while. Now tell me that is "awesome"!

I had lasik done in 01 or maybe 02, still LOVE it. I have a little bit of night vision issues, but they are more than offset by the ability to actually see without having to wear thick glasses.
