Without giving it away, there's a subtle thing that can easily be missed at the end that makes more sense of the outcome. I thought about it for a while and then when "oh, I get it". However, I agree with your review.
Saw today this movie called Chronicle. It's sci fi about 3 teenagers who get special powers and how it ends up screwing their minds. It's not a great film. It's like watching the Blair Witch Project so there's a lot of stuff in there that's meaningless to get that illusion of a reality film. But, it's worth watching. It makes you think what you would do if suddenly you were super human. Could you handle the responsibility?
Went to see Prometheus and walked out of it after about an hour. It started out phantastically by bringing up one of my pet peeves with von Daeniken's "Chariots of the Gods" theory. Finally a movie that'd go the extra mile. Then there was "Giger's fortress" on the lonely planet; another cool moment. But as soon as it turned into the "blair witch of Alien planet" and the subsequent slaughter fest I was done with it. Probably the most important scene of the movie were the first few minutes. Then again they don't really make much sense and take way too much liberty with the underlying theme. Shame really. The movie screams sequel and one can only hope that "Prometheus II" will finally take us where this one failed to do. Bummer.
Qft. Flat characters. Completely idiotic decisions that made me laugh out loud. Ooh play with the cute worm! Ok if an object is moving towards me to crush me maybe I should move to the side? More plot holes than a Chinese tugboat. All the frickin fan bois with the hidden theories. Vickers was an android. Christ was an alien. Blah blah. Im a huge Ridley Scott fan so I was naturally disappointed. Not even the same league as blade runner, aliens, or gladiator.
Almost NOBODY I know has seen this film, but it is in my top 5. "Perfume - The story of a Murderer" I didn't know anything about it when I saw it, and I recommend seeing it that way too....very well done film. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ES_rfgjeTuE&feature=related[/ame]
While I agree the 'Game of Shadows' is awful, you must have never read original Sherlock Holmes novels as he is a bare knuckle BOXER in them... He is a very violent man who is also a drug addict.
MI4: Ghost Protocol Tom Cruise still showing why he's the most annoying ****** in Hollywood to me. Jeremy Renner is quickly becoming one of my favourite actors though, although this role wasn't his greatest. All Tom Cruise really needs is a Captain America suit. In movies and in real live.
Prometheus. I had very high expectations and sadly it didn't meet them. It has its strong points, but several parts seemed to be there just to make the Alien crowd happy. If you have never seen Alien, the movie will not make sense and be a bit silly and pointless. Fantastic special effects and and an interesting premise, but it tries too hard to show where the traditional Aliens came from. If they had only existed for a few decades before Sigourney Weaver and the crew encountered them in Alien, it doesn't seem very plausible. I also don't think the "2000 years ago" reference was accidental, tying Christianity to the Engineers. Meh. Even the "human" engineer just turned into another monster at the end. Lazy writing. I have read that the one to see will be the director's cut. I'll give that one a try for sure. The ending was very intriguing and I would be interested to see a sequel, but I doubt it will happen. 7/10.
While I agree it was lacking, I think you missed some points. The planet Prometheus took place on was LV-223 and the planet Alien takes place on was LV-426. They arent the same planets. The Engineer at the end was simply a low level worker, not unlike someone toiling away in our coal mines today. They were on a mission to destroy life on earth when things went awry so when it wakes to see the very human it was trained to destroy..well, it gets violent. The point the film was *trying* to make was that just because something/one has the power to *create* doesnt mean they are necessarily some benevolent and enlightened being. It was , and is, foolish of us to think that if we meet our Creator they will live up to the vision we have in our heads. The film has a lot of thought behind it..unfortunately they did a crap job of explaining it onscreen.
Didn't see it but thought above was a great headline on Drudge, which linked to this: http://www.showbiz411.com/2012/06/16/tom-cruise-has-worst-weekend-ever-with-rock-of-ages
Battle Royale. 7.5/10. Exciting and ultraviolent. Makes Hunger GAmes look like sesame street. If you are into Japanese movies this makes a good rental.
Thanks for your comments. I'll wait for the director's cut, maybe the DVD will also have more explonations. I couldn't help but think that somebody waltzed in on the script and said "We need more action!" and then a great story became just another slaughterfest. Given your (past) interest and moniker, what were your thought on the opening scene? That to me was very lazy. Not even close to von Daeniken's vision. Unless I totally missed the point.
Good Will Hunting Very good and involving. If you love snappy dialogues, you will love this movie. Can't believe it was written by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, good job! 9/10
The opening scene was very interesting, but even it had a basic problem. If the Engineers are basically the same stuff as us they must breathe oxygen. A primordial Earth (or some other planet) would have huge concentrations of carbon dioxide to support the single cell or plant life that is assumed o spring forth due to his actions. Never mind that at the end of the movie the alien in the medical chamber started off the size of a football and at the end it was the size of a rhino. How did it grow while locked into the room? At the end of the day it is just a movie, and while it may have tried to ask deeper questions, in its present theatrical form it really misses the mark. And how stupid would people be to take their helmet off in an unknown environment? Maybe they were just trying to show our arrogance. Theron is wasted in this movie, IMO. The best part is where it is questioned whether she is even human. The story with her father should have been better explored. Just as she dissapoints him, it is a mirror of the overall story that the Engineers were unhappy with ther creation. One of my favorite aspects of the original Alien movies (Alien, Aliens, Alien 3, forget Alien Resurrection it is a waste of time), was how they seemed plausible for the future. They had spaceships, but still had things like the tradition of the Marines. They could travel light years but still had bad food. The mixing of the future with things sort of familiar to us today worked. The ship was a little to clinical and attractive this time around. Maybe because it was a high-dollar research vehicle unlike a mining freighter (Alien), or military ship (Aliens). I would put this one about the same quality as Alien 3. Not up to the excellence of Alien and especially Aliens.
Yes, very lazy. I was excited when I heard Ridley Scott was tackling the subject. But the film was a big let down. I was expecting much better. While plenty of films have touched on the Ancient Astronaut theories, I dont feel any have done them the justice it deserves. id love to see something really intelligent on the subject.
Glad you saw it that way too. I was thrilled about the idea of incorporating that into the story line, but the "execution" was anything but thrilling. They should have gone the Anunakki line (as in the people, not you ). Really? Can you name some? I'd love to catch up on that. There was Space Odyssee, I know that. Couldn't agree more. In fact last year I was thinking that at some point I should take a sabbatical and start writing a story line. Problem is, that it is not easy to "align" all the various visits into a logical sequence. Prometheus just lists the artifacts but skips over the fact, that there were thousands of years in between them. Not that it couldn't be explained, but it makes a sequential plot a bit challenging.
Saw Madagascar 3 with the GF last night. She really loved it. I thought it was just OK. I think they are just putting lots and lots of visual candy in these cartoons without much sense or story. However, there are some clever bits that kids won't understand, such as the evil female french animal control officer. Some of that I did like. It's not a total loss. It just should have been better IMO.
