    Hello again fellow "F"-Chatters,

I had started a tread a few days ago, but wanted to ask a new question regarding this topic.

I understand that depending on the year of car (mine is 79 308 GTB), the shift shaft seals could "O"-ring stye for seals with lip,to which lasted longer.

My question is on my car can I use the seals with a "lip" and will they last longer, or should I remain with the reqular "O"-rings.

Anyone that has experience with this job, is appreciated.

    Thanks, Chris.

I believe the mounting arrangement is quite different between the early o-ring (a small groove) and the later lip seal (which has a more substanial body holding the actual flexible sealing element so it needs a much bigger mounting feature/hole).

For the early o-ring design, it is possible to substitute a more modern sealing ring with a 4-lobed cross-section (these are called "Quad Rings" by B+S and "Quattro Rings" by McMaster-Carr). Try a search -- someone just posted the McMaster-Carr PN (~20mm ID with a ~3mm cross-section in Viton) that is the correct equivalent to the stock o-ring (per Kermit).
