My TV has been stuck on NASA TV all weekend. Even woke up early to see the early part of the EVA this morning before work. The "Flight day highlights" are starting on the TV channel now, and I'm watching. This is history!

Adding slightly to the drama of humans space walking, there is a small problem they've had in knowing for certain in all the leading edges still have their heat tiles undamaged, due to a camera boom problem.

Question for those who follow the space program. We're cancelling shuttle flights just as the Space Station is being completed. How are we going to get US astronauts back and forth? Are we planning to rely on Russia and Japan to get them there and back?

The original plan was/is to de-orbit (read: throw the ISS into the sky and burn up) the ISS in 2015. The last shuttle launch will carry the last piece to install so it will be complete...but there will be no way to get back to the ISS from the US.

Now, the last shuttle launch (STS-134) was delayed to install a magnet or something along those lines to extend the service life of the ISS to 2020 if not farther. Pretty stupid that this wasn't thought of earlier. Obama is counting on the private industry to make a craft that they will use.

I'm not counting on it. :(
