Trying to replace the latch housing on my 78 308 gts. The vinyl covered piece to the left of the latch seems to be overlapping the housing and impeding the removal. Is this piece removable. I see no screws. Your help would be appreciated. Dennis

Sorry about the rotation of the photo.

If I remember, it is attached to the latch. If you lift the latch and look underneath, you will see a screw. BUT...it probably won't come out, since the latch, housing and cable are all connected as one. You would need to undo the cable at the other end to get the slack out, and pull the latch and housing out as one.

Or, if you lift the latch, you may see the screw, unscrew it and slide the housing out around the latch. I think it is attached to the latch, but it may not be.

I can not remember exactly, but I know there is a screw under the latch the holds it all in place. It may be possible to remove the latch from the old housing and install a new housing, if it is not glued in pace. You would probably need to get the whole thing out to see.

Here is the back of the latch, and it looks like on piece. Bottom is screw hole, middle is cut cable end, top is spring for latch.

I understand how to get the latch out except that the vinyl covered piece to its left is overlapping the plastic and hindering its removal. It looks like this piece is riveted in place and cannot be removed. See pencil mark. Thanks

Now I see what you are saying. Though I have a 328, not a 308, the parts book doesn't show that piece or how it is connected. Even with the latch unscrewed, you can't wiggle it out from under it? Though I see if you could, putting a new unbroken housing back in wouldn't be possible with it there. Don't know but will look some more.

I finally pushed a thin metal putty knife next to the vinyl and carefully worked it out. Thanks for your effort!
