Kevin, thanks a great deal for the detail on getting Richard and the car out at this marvelous place. It is truly amazing what is done on salt and how hard it is to do it! Your project is terrific.

I was the project head and crew chief preparing a Fiat-Abarth 1000 GT Bialbero to break the I/GT record in 1992, which we did at 123.310 mph (best run, the record was 121.XXX). We had NO idea that the salt would be as slippery as it was, but the driver was a throttle artist, even at just 112 bhp!

The BNI and SCTA staff are the best and everyone I'm sure made you feel very welcome! Can't wait to hear about your first runs on the "big" (7-mile) course.

Interesting that the original photos (including the cover and first story photo) of that car for the '03 R&T article were taken on the salt...

A bit of unintentional foreshadowing, perhaps?

Good luck next week, and thanks for the updates. :)

Thanks so much for sharing! It must be very exciting to analyze the potentiometer output at the springs vs. speed while accelerating, braking and parachute deployment.

Richard Losee has asked me to post a general statement concerning the MM Enzo project.

That specific information concerning the rebuild of the MM Enzo includes:
Tom Sorenson of S&S Exotics oversaw the repairs to the damaged carbon fiber tub. The repairs were thoroughly tested to assure OEM strength and stability.

After the completion of carbon repairs, the major reconstruction was performed at Steve Harris Imports , an Authorized Ferrari Dealer in Salt Lake City, the reconstruction required 2 ½ years.
Built to original Factory specs with original Ferrari parts, with the addition of a Twin Turbo set-up by Shane Tecklenburg (telemetry, Garmin, Motec). The MoTeC system controls ignition, fuel delivery and related, and boost is fully controllable by the ECU’s.

Air to air and liquid to air intercoolers, with integral housings, intake and charge air tubes with high performance fuel delivery system designed and fabricated by Kevin Marsh, with welding and assembly by Jason Marsh and Mark Lockhart. Custom exhaust headers to power twin Precision turbos, with waste gates and exhaust pipes engineered and fabricated by Mark Lockhart and Jason Marsh.

All modifications were painted in the Ferrari tradition, wrinkle black, silver and medium grey were used on charge tubes, mounting brackets and ECU boxes. The right side ECU box is a new construction, enlarged to allow for additional wiring from the MoTeC system.

The F-1 transmission was modified with a tall 6th gear to reach speeds required at Bonneville. Pat Weismann of Weismann Transmission designed and created the gear set.

The objective of the build is twofold, first to prepare the car for speed trials on the Bonneville Salt Flats, with the goal of setting records in both the fuel and gas categories of Blown Modified Sports. Second, to return the vehicle to street use after its Bonneville experience. With the exception of the Bonneville wheels and tires and the poly carbonate windshield the vehicle remains street legal. The hood and rear deck in use for race purposes, are the original MM Enzo pieces, and have been carefully repaired. The Glickenhaus panels will be installed when the car is converted back to street use. Extensive heat shielding has been added to protect the carbon tub.

To conform to SCTA rules a chrome-moly roll cage, meeting their specifications was constructed and installed at Lockhart Enterprises (local Salt flat experts). Front bumper modification and modifiable front splitter, are removable, and can be analyzed during test runs via spring data monitored by the MoTeC system. The MoTeC also records g-data and GPS to determine the characteristics of the car during each run.

    Team RSL Racing includes:
Richard Losee, owner and driver, Richard is the 1997 SCCA Group 2 National Pro Rally Champion.
Kevin Marsh, project manager, and crew chief. 40 years experience in automotive restoration, fabrication and design.
Lead technician: Randy Felice, 25 years as Authorized Ferrari Technician with Steve Harris Imports, Salt Lake City, Utah
Engine management design, tuning and data acquisition: Shane Tecklenburg (Tuned by Shane T ) MoTeC system expert.
    Additional Crew Members:
Jason Marsh, Mark Lockhart, Paul Manukian, Elizabeth Marsh
Specialty Machine work, performed by Steve Stevens of Eagle Machine in Midvale, Utah
Additional Carbon fiber repairs and body and paint work performed by Dale Jolley and Robert Steggell
Main Sponsors: Steve Harris Imports, authorized Ferrari Dealer, Salt Lake City, Utah
Miller Motor Sports Park, Tooele, Utah

So what happens to the car after Bonneville?

Is it gonna be modified back to a stock look or is it remaining as it is now?

We built the car with the intention of returning it back to street use. All the race specific components such as the poly-carbonate windshield, wheels/tires, hood, rear deck, aero effects, liquid to air intercoolers, racing seat, transmission gearing and majority of the roll cage will be removed, and replaced with the stock parts.

We will lower the boost to make it more managable for street driving, so basically we end up with a mostly stock Enzo, with the benifit of twin turbos. We will leave the fire suppression system in place, as a precaution, just relocate the bottles.

One feature we built into the car is the MoTeC ADL3 dash logger. It compiles data from the potentiameters on the four coil springs, as well as GPS and g-forces. Should the front springs expierence a rapid or unusual lift above a preset speed, or it detects a g-reading that it doesn't like, the ADL3 will rev limit to 1000. Basically reacting faster than the driver to shut down the car before it can get airborne or go out of control.

On the cars first run, we had the g-meter set low, and when Richard pulled off the smooth part of the course onto the bumpy recovery area, the car lost all power. We had not throughly discussed that built in feature of the car with him, so he naturally thought we had an engine problem, when in fact the car was doing just what we wanted. A few tuning adjustments raised the limits and away we went.

Had the Enzo never been wrecked, the current modifications to the car would not been made. He is a "Ferrari Guy" and not a "Hot Rodder" as evidenced by the other Ferraris he owns that remain stock and well documented. What do you do with a destroyed Enzo? Richard had several options, and made the choice to see just how fast he could make it go, then return it to street trim, with a few extra horses under the hood.

    Oh....I might leave the parachutes......jk

    Thanks Peter,

It's great to hear from someone that has "been there, done that" and congratulations on getting the I/GT record! At any speed or hp, out there that is an accomplishment.

    This is a great thread,
    and I wish there were
a lot more like it !

I met Kevin Marsh on the salt, for the first time,
and I hope it won't be the last.

Kevin seemes quite humble, and willing to talk circumspectly about this project,
    and it's project goals.

I would love to be able to say I had seen the world's fastest FERRARI run.

(And BTW, what IS the fastest Ferrari, and what is it's top speed ???)

I had just come to Bonneville from the Loring (Maine) speed trials,
where I had seen the below motorcycle #5112 hit 273 MPH, not it's top speed,
since the engine blew about 1/8 mile from the lights,
and the bike COASTED through for a time of that 273 MPH.

My own streetbike #1110 (Dean Sabatinelli riding) was able
to come in a respectable 2nd, with a blistering 269.977 MPH

Also included is the shot posted by Peleton25 showing of the ENZO,
with me in my Land Speed Racing (LSR) uniform of white shoes, blue jeans,
white or blue shirt, and red hat. My hat was not Ferrari, but from the
    Bonneville 200 MPH Club,
given to those who set records over 200 MPH on the salt.

I am wearing the same "uniform" watching Bike #5112
take off on his record-breaking run.

The MM Enzo project shows a lot of thought for Bonneville,
especially the Mickey Thompson Bonneville tires,
    the hand-made "hellaflush" wheels
and the lowering of the car.

It will take a lot of horsepower to push this somewhat-big car over 250 MPH,
and I wish the merry band of pranksters all the best.

I will add the photo's when I can get my attachments below the "limit."
    Scott

For the record, the only credible information you can get about this car will either be from myself, or from Project Manager Kevin Marsh.

Just about everything in the report is false except for the fact that the car did spin. It was not during our licensing passes which we completed, rather during a subsequent test run with one of our possible setups for the long course. We are working through several setup changes trying to find the one with the best result for straight-line running on the salt and we found one that was less stable than the data indicated.

Thank you for your interest in this project.

Jalopnik is good for a laugh or two occasionally, but I don't go there for anything I would want to believe as factual. I'm glad you guys are willing to share with us as much as you do. Great work, and all the best!

I just read the article as well, and concur with Shane's conclusion.

Our objective for the car was as stated in an earlier post, and part of the challenge involved to running on the Salt is making adjustments then evaluating how they effect the overall performance. Overall we are very happy with how the car reacted, and each run gave us valuable data to use for our overall long term objectives.

Again, thank you for all the positive feedback, and we will keep you posted.

As time allows, I will begin sharing a few of the build photos as well

    Regard,

    Kevin Marsh
