I have an old Honda lawn mower that would start but not run. It's happened before and has always been a gunked up carb problem. My mechanical skills are limited, and I really don't want to spend $80 to have my 20 year old mower repaired. I have others but the Honda is a favorite and I don't mow much. Rather than pay to have it rebuilt again, I bought a brand new carb and put it on.

Same problem. Will start, but won't run. I know its not the carb! It acts like its not getting gas, but the fuel system is pretty simple: a tank and a line to the carb. Both are fine.

    Thoughts?

Vent on cap of gas tank plugged? This would explain it if it took a few minutes to die

There is often a screen inside the fuel tank where the outlet hose is fitted, and this can become restricted due to contamination in the tank (grass/rust/etc.). You might want to just unhook the fuel line from the carburetor, put some gas in the tank, and open and close the fuel shutoff valve a few times. Is fuel actually flowing through the hose? It's gravity feed, not from a pump, so it needs to be clear.

I have seem the intake valve start to stick in the guide on a few of the older Hondas. Adding Techron to your fuel helps to keep the stems clean. Also might want to chec valve clearances.
