A lot of f cars show up on ebay that the seller knows full well will not sell. The listing is mainly an ad and the cars sell after the auction ends and the buyer can insect the car and it's records. There is no reason to wait to contact the dealer and mension you would like the see the service history they claim are available in the auction text..

Note: They can share the past records, and all they have to do is block out the name and numbers. Past records will help you know where it has been, and what "supposidly" has been done to the car.

That said. I forced the records from my dealer, and things were assumed to be done, until I put it on a rack and checked it out!!

Put it up, inspect engine mounts, belts, leaks, etc!! Just a visual will tell you quite a bit about the car, and potential future issues. There are many shops that will not do a good job on a 30K, etc service. It is not specific to the shop but more the person that is working on the car that day, how business is going, tired/overworked, or trying to get it out the door quickly.

You are going to drop a lot of money for a car. This is not a reliable honda that you will purchase. YOU must be happy with the car. IF you are not comfortable with the information, the dealer, suspect something... DONT BUY!! It is worth getting it inspected by a friend, mech, etc before spending that kind of money. Plus, after one good inspection, you will know what to look for in the next one you want to look at.

    Thanks for the info Carmine.
Any car I intend to buy will get a PPI. I live in Massachusetts, it is much cheaper to get a PPI first, then if the car is satisfactory I will fly out to SF and inspect it myself. That is if I see service records that show satisfactory maintanance first!

Although privacy issues have become more of a focus since HIPPA legislation was passed, I find it to be sheer BS for a dealer of exotic cars to refuse to tell you/show you service records sans personal info. Knowing the service hx for any exotic car is a critical part of the decision to purchase. Any dealer who doesn't know that is either nuts or is lying. There is no logical reason why service records can't be revealed, w/o personal id info, by a dealer of high-priced, exotic vehicles. I wouldn't buy a car from someone who refused to reveal the service hx.
I ran into this in NY last year after purchasing an NSX. I called a dealer who had done service on the car and got the same routine. I made a personal call to the owner of the dealership and stated the obvious. He released the service records w/o the previous owner's name. Ironically, during the same week, I called another dealer in Pa who had serviced the car as well and I was sent all service records with no problem. Go figure.

    Verell,

Just as an FYI, Gentry Lane is still selling Ferrari's in Toronto Canada. How was that Ferrari you bought in 2001 anyways?
For what it is worth, I too cant understand why a dealer would not supply such critical information as a cars service records to a potential buyer if all of the personal information is deleted? It should raise some red flags thats for sure!

I knew they were very actively selling parts on eBAY, but had heard that they were out of the sales end of things.

As to my car. Overall I'm very happy with the car. I still have it & intend to do so for a long time to come.

But, I was/still am exceedingly unhappy with the major service it received as part of the purchase deal.

I finally ended up redoing everything he did, before the car was finally sorted out. Just look up my timing drive bearing service threads in the old fchat archives. Probably should have kept better records & gotten an attorney, but at the time I just wanted to drive my car.

If I wasn't a reasonably competent amateur mechanic, I probably would have ended up in court over that botched major & the subsequent botched attempts at sorting it out.

On the plus side, sorting the car out got me a lot of great help from the FerrariList & FerrariChat. Help I keep trying to repay by passing on what I've learned in the process.
