This car was racing at Lime Rock Vintage Festival 2004.

The rear decklid has a small square area that has been expertly sanded, exposing every layer of paint that has ever been applied to the car. I thought it was very interesting to view, much like a history lesson of this particular Ferrari, right before my eyes.

Could someone please explain the reasons for this? Was it done for Concours reasons? Or for some odd rule in Vintage Racing? It is the only car with such a display that I have ever seen. Perhaps it was done simply to display the pedigree of this rare racing Ferrari, or the owner just thought it looked cool.

Has anyone seen this before? On a different car?

    Bingo.

I bet the owner can tell you exactly what periods the car wore each colour and where it raced, etc. Thus showing this (though weird and not something I would do) shows the pedigree of this particular car and is 100% proof it is what he/she says it is.

This car is 750 Monza 0518M, in case any one here was interested in trying to match the car's history to the underlying paint. By the way, that patch of exposed paint was there when the car appeared at Goodwood in 1998, so it was probably done by previous owner Paul Kunkel.

I think it's pretty cool. The mystique of the vintage race cars is their history. That little rectangle is a literal window to 0518M's history. Something to think about as we get closer to taking off the red lacquer my father painted (0446)0556MD in 1960, the gunmetal blue that Robert Davis painted it a year or so before, the dark blue it wore when Rubirosa won the 2-liter class at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 56, and finally down to the french blue the factory painted it for Francois Picard and which it wore when Castellotti drove it to a class win at the GP of Venezuela in 55 . . .

I really hope you will repaint it in one of the original blue colors! Please, not another resale red Ferrari. When I look at contemporary color phptographs I get really exited by all those different color schemes Ferraris were raced in. I love the blue, yellow, green etc. race Ferraris!

we're taking it back to how it looked for its most notable performance, the 55 GP of Venezuela w/ Castellotti. So it will be its first color, the original french blue w/ the SF shields and #8. We were lucky enough to find spots of the original blue under the bezels of the gauges when we removed them from the instrument panel so we could get a good match on paint never damaged or faded by UV or dirt. Practically no other body work will be done - this is not a better-than-new effort - you can still see Scaglietti's hammer marks. All items affecting safety are being replaced; rubber/seals/wiring.

Great! Good luck with your restoration and I'm looking forward to pictures of the result (it would be even greater to see it in the flesh - Mille Miglia maybe?)

the MM? I'd have to hit the lottery first . . .

We are doing the work ourselves w/ assistance from David Carte and his associated craftsmen - so this is a long process. We hope to have the car at the FCA National in 2006 when it conveniently will be hosted by the Mid-Atlantic Region.

    Wayne,
    Thank you for the info!
I knew that F Chat was the place to post that question. Everyone here is so knowledgable about Ferraris. I was betting that someone would be able to identify this exact example by serial number. You even know who the previous owner was, amazing. Have you seen this paint exposure on any other vintage racing cars? Is this the only such racer to have such a display of pedigree?

    Thanks again,

    Alex

Alex, this is the only one I've seen.

Bryan, tell the Admiral that we out here on the west coast would love to see (0446)0556MD make it to Monterey when competed.

thanks for the interest, fellas - I think you've got an idea there, Erik; we could start a Ferrarichat-based 501(c) tax-exmpt charity to send the poor architect and his dad's Ferrari to the MM! Rigth now, we're just focused on getting the car done for 2006 FCA - after that, I think dad may be contemplating one of the domestic tours like Colorado Grand, etc.

As far as posting pics of the restoration, it's up to him; I'll ask.

Oh Dale, can you help with this? No, I'm not kidding.

I see a FChat bake sale coming up...
