Laying bricks question

    I am adding some bricks to my step to my patio. Coming out of my house to the patio there is one step. The patio has an overhang so they will never be wet. The patio has sunk about an inch and a half - two inches since it was built. I bought some large patio bricks and cut them to fit. Now I need to bond them to the top of the original steps which are made out of the typical house siding bricks. 3" by 8" or so. I don't want to try and put mortar between the bricks. I just want to glue them to the tops of the old steps. So what are my choices? Should I use a type of cement? Urethane caulk? Epoxy or?? Would a certain type of concrete something be OK? Mortar cement? I have no real experience with laying bricks and stuff.

    Try landscape block adhesive. When it comes time to rebuild, change or if you continue to have problems with the settling of the existing step, you can pry them up if needed.

    Thin set, concrete patch, epoxies etc, would be much more permanent. So if you wanted to go that route I'd use thin set mortar like the stuff they use for tile.

    Good advice.....just be aware that if these are actual classic red clay/sand baked bricks, the are , although beautiful, and my first choice for bricks, but somewhat sensitive to chipping/cracking. If/when you pry them off in the future, they may crack at the pry bar point of pressure.

    Rod,
    just went to home depot last night, and got some PL 400 heavy duty adhesive, says good for masonry. hope this helps. It's actually for a concrete project Im doing...

    I would have went with the Epoxy. The adhesive is good but the epoxy if applied properly is the best. The epoxy has a longer life and not as susceptible to weather conditions.

    I asked my brother as he had done most of a Builders apprenticeship before he became a Diesel Fitter and he said he would just bed the new bricks on a bed of compacted river sand ;) He also said if you were keen you could also lightly sprinkle dry cement powder over the compacted river sand and lightly wet it before you lay your bricks on it to bond them a little bit better. Post some pics if you can for us :)

    I like the thin set idea. This is a temporary fix. In a few years it all gets taken out and a new patio and pool will go in. I picked up some thin set and soon I'll mix it up and set the bricks.

    if the patio has sunk why are you raising the height of the step. the distance from the top of the step, the part you walk on, to the ground shouldn't be more than 9".

    Even though the patio sunk both steps now are at about 8 inches rise. I'll post pictures later.

    looks fine to me. i would pass it on an inspection. what did you use to set the pavers?

    Top job Rodney :) Just those 3 pavers , I would of have just used a few tubes of silicon myself ;)

    I'll have to show my brother, he thought it was a much bigger job :)
