Im thinking about getting either a Sharp 45" LCD 45GD7U or a 40"Samsung LN R409D. The sharp has a higher res 1980x1080 but the Samsung has a faster rsponse time less then 9mls. Does anyone have either of these? I am pretty set on the LCD as I have a high def imac and the LCD is amazing. I cant really afford a new tv but my 12" B&W motorola is about to give out :p.

If you watch a lot of sporting events or action movies you will want to look at plazma or DLP as you will get some trails in fast action scenes with LCD screens...kinda reminds you of the 60s...

The larger the screen the more you will notice the trials...although I do understand that the newer LCD screens are much better than the old ones were...

Yeah as for hockey or racing, the "trails" can make you dizzy. It's a blurry image and if you watch fast moving events the tv isn't worth getting at all. The plasma's are the way to go but a lot more expensive. If you don't want a plasma, get a good quality regular tv.

You'll only see the "trails" or Ghosting if you have LCDs with response times over 12ms. I played CounterStrike Source on a LCD monitor with something like 21ms response time and even the bullets had ghosting, looked like something out of the matrix.

Plasma will display better blacks, has no lag issues, LCD doesn't have any burn in issues if you are watching non-widescreen formats.

I have been watching on the sidelines for a couple of years now waiting to jump in. Actually the new 16.9 widescreen LCD's are the more expensive models with the sharp retailing at $6,000. I have this great I mac with a high def lcd and it is so amazing that is why I am interested in the LCD, the ones I mentioned abaove are not even in any local stores mainly the models from 2 years ago!!! I am set on the LCD just wondering if anyone had one of these new gen state of the art sets. my mac is 1980x1080 and people sit in fromnt of it for hours looking at photos as the they pan in and out using the ken burns effect it has built in. I am hoping to get something on a large scale.

didn't know that about LCDs, I watch a lot of sports and wouldn't like the trails.

Anyone seen one of those Philips Ambilight LCDs? It strikes me as a gimic, but haven't seen one....

I have two Pioneer Elite plasmas, a 43 inch and a 50 inch and they both have a "shift" feature that shifts the picture a small amount to avoid any burn-in problems. As long as you don't constantly play video games, burn-in is no longer a real concern with modern high-line plasma TVs.

I guess I'm a little in the dark here. You say that money is tight and your 12" B & W TV has puked, and now you are jumping up to a 45" LCD?? Not to pry into your personal decisions, but why not buy a 32" CRT (they have about the best pics anyway if you have the space) and use the rest of the dough for other things? Just a thought :)

Pass on that refurbed Sharp LCD. You can do better than that brand new:http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php/masterid=4092441/sort_type=bottomline

Beware of "trails" on the Sharp LCDs. Bro in law has the 37" and any fast action gets "jagged" and "choppy".

    That's what I thought...

If he can't afford it, then why is he buying it?

A Sony FD Trinitron or something like it would have no ghosting or burn in issues, and would be alot cheaper...

I live in caliufornia, so technically im a millionaire (house) although cash poor, I am a working man, with a wife and Ferrari to support!!. :-S

To answer your questions you can read above or here.

I have an imac widescreen computer with a high def lcd display, which blows away everyone who has seen it. It is 1680x1050. I work real hard but also watch allot of interesting tv. I have high def digital cable and I need to replace my 20 year old tv so I am interested in a new state of the art LCD. Hell, like most americans I cant afford anything I buy but does that stop us, the federal government just rang up the largest credit card bill in history. I have a large collection of Ferrari stuff I couldn't afford either. :p I guess my point is 5-6 grand is allot for the average american. However I am still thinking about it so I was looking for someone who had one of these newer models. They are so new that there is hardly any feedback around on them, and many of the stores Circut City etc have models that are 2 years old for sale. I knew more abbout the newer models than they did. So anyway there is my story.

    Thanks for the comments,

    Rob

I have the Sony KDL-V40XBR1 (I paid $2999.00 at Best Buy). I don't see any of the problems people say are found with LCD's. Sports look incredible. I just hooked my DVD player through an hdmi connection and the difference between that and the component signal is remarkable(hdmi upconverts the signal).

My father -inlaw has this Samsung, HL-R5688W and the picture is incredible. Plus it comes in a 56 inch screen.
