LCD TV

I'd imagine $1000K could get you a tv of fairly high quality.

 

I plan to buy two new LCD HD TVs within the next few weeks. My research indicates that the Sharp Aquos is now the best on the market. Whatever you do, don't get a plasma...they are heavy, create a lot of heat, use a lot of power and will show burn-in if you play video games, use TIVO or even from icons or moving tickers on the bottom of the screen. The life span of a plasma screen is about 1/3 of that of an LCD screen too. Since I refuse to watch TV without TIVO, I will be using LCDs from hence forth.

 

I recently bought this JVC LCD and love it. I'm sure you can get in the States too.

Much of your comments are wrong requarding the LCD/Plasma Debate.

Weight - About the same for plasma / LCD (within a few pounds)

Heat - Very Close (Put your hand in front of an LCD TV panel)

Burn In - Maybe if you watch something with a ticker numerous hours per day, Plasmas do have screensavers that you don't see

Video Games - Plasma are much better for Video Games, LCD's show artifacts

Lifespan - Most of today's better plasmas have a long lifespan then LCD's

My Recomendation: 37" or smaller - Get and LCD, Above 37" - Get a plasma

In the 37+ Range, a top of the line plasma has a much better picture than an LCD.

Also you are correct on the Sharps. They are the best if you are looking for an LCD. Didn't mean to try and make you look bad on your comments. But I've been in the High End Custom A/V business for over 7 years and it is what I do.

I just read a comparison tonight that confirms all of this. The only thing that an LCD had better marks in were bright room viewing. Plasma is the way to go. I have had tivo on mine for a year and have zero issues.

who is the manufacturer? does it have a port in the back where you can plug your laptop in? how much extra do they charge for the HD turner?
i am sort of dense about all this plasma vs. LCD thing.....thanks for your help

That is right. An LCD is brighter, so in a very bright room it is easier to watch. However when in a dark room, you have to turn down the brightness on some of them because they are too bright. The brightness settings on most of them from the factory are way over ISF specifications.

Another benefit of LCD is they don't have a glass panel on the front. The glass on a plasma can show reflections depending on position in the room and location of windows. Again a negative during the day in some situations.

From everything I have read and personally viewed at several A/V retailers the LCDs are much better if you have TIVO. If you have TIVO then you know that you can pause the picture which I often do when the phone rings, bathroom breaks, ect... that along with the station icons at the bottom of the screen on most network shows on stations such as NBC and FOX that stay on thoughout entire programs will WILL cause burn-in on plazma tvs. And, even companies that sell both LCD and plazma tvs acknowledge the problem with burn-in, weight, heat, screen lifespan and power consumption of plazma tvs. You can compare the screen life and power requirements differences yourself by reading the specs of plazma and LCD tvs. In fact, Consumer Reports indicates that plazma is on its way out now that the previously more expensive LCDs have lessen their prices and started making larger screens.

 

Are you insane?! Plasma's picture is absolutely HORRIBLE.

Any even shabbily produced and set-up LCD is far far far supior.

 

And from your profile you do this for a living?

What plasmas are you comparing to? Samsungs?

Come out to our showroom and show me one LCD that looks better than any plasma we have on display.

 

I have a 50" Pioneer Elite Plasma and a Sharp Aquos LCD among other TV's.

By far the Pioneer picture is better than the Aquos picture. Not sure about heat and who cares about weight.

Have been so busy with work haven't had time for anything.

 

Second that. The Pioneer Elite 50 is a super TV.

 

Runco(who OEs), Pioneer, Fujitsu, Hitachi. All of them have ****ty blacks, washed out colour, and a dithering look in both chroma and luma, especially in darker tones or areas of high chroma difference.

LCDs (Sharp and Sony pannels I am most familiar with) suffer from none of this, and when equally calibrated, outshine *any* plasma I have had exiperence with. They currently lack only screen real estate to their plasma competitiors. They have better whites, blacks, contrast, chroma rendition, and resolution.

Frankly, I'm as surprised as you are to hear someone else in the industry saying what you are. I'll take you up on your invitation if you furnish the ticket

 

The Pioneer plasmas are indeed in my opinion the best of the line. The Elite unit however uses the same tube and circuitry as the standard 50" pioneer model.

The bezel the Elite unit uses however is also amoungst the best looking in the plasma world. A good set. But not the equal of the 42" LCDs even.
