one of the great officiating cock-ups of all time.

green lights, but yellow flags; pace car stays out, but with its lights off.

    oy vey.

Looks more like a race-control issue. I'm guessing the lights went green a lap early.

I think that was the planned green flag lap (based on the commentators), but something went wrong to cause them to wave off the green a bit too late.

Terrible starting disaster! I'm going to have to find this race (hopefully on racing underground) because I missed the RLM feed.

anybody willing to finish this statement...

    "That was a serious cluster...."

You could see the guy waving the yellow off to the right before the cars were given the green. What chaos.

Reminds me of the pile-up at Road America at the BRIC.

actualy all porsche GTE pro contenders crashed at the start, and not one of them got back to the race, leaving Ferrari to win 1-2-3-4 in GTE-PRO unchalinged

I thought that might be the issue, also. There's a lot of blame to go around here. The flag net had the flaggers waving yellow the whole time ("One more pace lap")...but the pace car's lights were off ("Don't follow me")...but he's still on the track ("You've no choice but to follow me")...and the idiot running the lights goes green ("I'm not paying a bit of attention to what's going on"). Wow! I never thought I'd live to see the day!!

The irony is that four of the five cars eliminated were Porsches, which resulted in a Ferrari 1-2-3-4 finish in GTE-Pro! Talk about being handed a victory on a silver platter.....

I think that's pretty spot-on...lots of bad decisions piling on top of each other but multiple people who have some level of "race control"

Rumour has it that GTE competitors will be allowed to drop one race of the series to keep the Porsche and Aston teams in the championship. Apparently the ferrari teams agreed to this, just awaiting some official word to see whether it is true or not. Would be good for the championship battle if it was, Im guessing Porsche gave the organisers a bit of a blast.
