    Hi experts,

    I have the engine out of a 246 and want to check the leakdown before taking it apart. Since this engine shares the gearbox with the bottom of the engine and oil sump like a 308/328 is there a problem in generating my leakdown numbers if the gearbox is separated from the engine?

    I ask because it may be more practical to test the engine when on a stand (in my case requiring the gearbox removal) rather than on the ground complete. The plan is to take the engine partially apart and re-seal the whole thing (heads included) but I just want some numbers before taking it apart.

    Any input would be appreciated.

    I leak down motors all the time on the engine stand. I even do overhauled motors as soon as the heads are on long before final assembly.

    Would lack of oil throughout the engine (i.e. a semi stripped or just assembled engine) not have a significant effect on leakdown?

    If it is a good motor no oil required. Oil will only prop up bad motors.
