After a major service, I have a few bugs that need to be worked out. Recently I posted a question related to a hard starting condition and although I have not solved it, I have purchased the guage set up and am ready to give the suggestions a try. The purpose of this thread is related to the a/c compressor. I was getting a belt squeal and found that the compressor is leaking oil onto the alternator belt and making a mess. The a/c blows cold but clearly the seals need attention. Does anyone know if there is any service that does a rebuild (seems like nobody rebuilds anything anymore). Also, does anyone know of a replacement compressor that is budget freindly? I am told it is a York compressor yet anything on-line suggests p/n 115779 - Aspera Frigo HG700AP.

    Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Failed to mention that the car is an '81 308

The YORK compressor can be had at NAPA for ~$300 IIRC. You'll have to swap the clutch.

Replacing the seals rarely works. But if you want to give it a try, find a local AC parts shop and ask them to do it for you.

Also, search "YORK" on the 308 and tech boards. Tons of info.

Not true. Did mine last year. NAPA parts, and the compressor is so simple it's stupid (made in Decatur, Illinois). Of course you'll need a vacuum pump and gauges and R12. Get the York service manual and torque the bolts in the proper pattern and don't try and force too much R12 in the system (like others have mistakenly done). Also, check to make sure the hoses that run to the condensor aren't rubbing on the fuel tank strap. Mine had chaffed and caused a leak.

Well, I decided to purchase the NAPA compressor. Although I haven't recieved it yet, it is on order and expected mid next week. NAPA carries the unit at it's warehouse for $409 + shipping. Apparently it is a York and not a knock-off.

I don't expect surprizes but will post any if I find them. Thanks for all the help!
