I went with a friend to look at a 94 348 he was wanting to buy. There seemed to be some oil dripping from the clutch housing.. any ideas what would cause this? It's not something I've seen before

Throw out bearring seals, or the bearring assy. Not a major problem, and fairly easy to fix yourself!

"Oil dripping from the clutch housing" could be:

    1) Brake fluid leaking from the clutch release bearing (as noted by Matermech)

    2) Transmission fluid leaking from the triple seals.

    3) Diluted Kluber grease leaking out of the flywheel.

    Or a combination thereof.

I reached under there and it appeared to be the color of "clean oil" so i'm guessing tranny fluid?

Does it smell funny, like gear oil? If not it's DOT 4 brake fluid that is used for the cluth throw out bearing. It's not engine oil as it would have to be blown back from the bottom of the engine and you would see a huge mess under there.

Yup, yup. "Clean" fluid is going to be like Miltonian and MaterMech say:

Triple seals (easy, easy, easy fix and cheap!)
    or
Throwout bearing (easy fix, slight cost)

Time to pull off that clutch pumpkin!

No kidding. Without fixing that simple leak, that car may not start when hot (if it's the triple-seal/flywheel grease issue)...or may not shift (or shift well) if it's from a failed/failing throwout bearing.

Easiest way to tell the difference between brake fluid and gearbox oil is to mix it with water, if it emulsifies its the oil. fluid mixes with water.

As people say, either way no big deal. Ive also just done the flywheel after the grease turned to water in there, think i may have fried it! But its still thicker than the oil so easily told apart. the brothers instructions to fix are great, will have a coupel of additions, sizes fo o rings etc to add, but great work.

Will get it back in tomorrow morning then off ready for day at the prescott hillclimb track Sunday - all being well.
