    Well,

Here is the first mechanical expense to date out of my pocket. The last trip cost $4k, but was covered under extended warranty that cost $4k. So I am even for now. Anyhow, my power steering reservoir is leaking, so the tech thought to try to reseal for the second time. The warranty will not cover that specific part!!

After 20 miles it has not leaked, but I guess eventually it will. I am being quoted $1600 for a new one. Does that sound about right? What's involved in replacing it? Would it qualify as a DIY job?

If anyone has experienced something similiar, let me know of your results.

    Great appreciated!

    Alex

If you don't mind me asking, but what was wrong that caused you to go on that first trip, and possibly $4K?

    Here goes.

The driver's door power window motor went out. Needed replacement. Right rear shock was not responding, so an error light kept coming on. Fuel door sensor mechanism was not working and there was a leak that turned out to be the power steering reservoir. Everything was covered except the reservoir, so the tech(Todd) tried to reseal it twice at this point. So far so good.

I don't have time for a detailed reply, but the p s and the front lift system are tied together. The seals on the shocks also fail and the factory replacements at close to 2kdollars per will also fail, and have no warranty. The suspension system is the weak point of these cars. There is a guy that rebuilds the shocks and warrants them for about half the cost of the factory replacements. Or, you could simply replace the entire system, at some cost. But, if you experience repeated shock failures (including the electronic sensor in the shock, which as far as I know, nobody can rebuild or replace short of buying a new shock), you will eventually spend what it takes to replace the entire system with a more robust one.

Thank god for the warranty. I bought it for 4k from Lambo of Denver for 3 years, effective 12/1/07. It's pretty comprehensive. So the $4k first service total was actually completely covered by Toyota (that's who the warranty is thru). I was even money after that. Cost me only $50 deductible out of pocket. It's just that the warranty did not cover the reservoir which frustrated me.

So back to the part in question. Is the replacement of the reservoir a DIY, or is it a dealer job only? And, is $1600 truly the cost of that part? Is there a cross to another manufacturer, such as Nissan perhaps?

    Thanks again,

    Alex

Depending on your skill level and resources everything is a DIY job.
