Is learning a new language online the proper way to learn for the long term?

Also, is a teacher more likely to point out ways of learning/ remembering thousands of new words simply, compared to one learning alone and comparing English words/ thoughts to German words? ie: for me "Klein" which means "small" might be remembered as "Hey, I know an F1 racer by the name of Christian Klien and he's a small fry in terms of winning, so I'll remember Klein means small by remembering Christian Klien".

Yes, I know the words hae the i and e swapped.

Did anyone here learn german fluently after only knowing English?

    Thanks.

P.S. It's late so excuse spelling and my total random thoughts.

I'm starting this next week for Italian. It came highly recommended.

You can take a couple of practice lessons online, I think you can take the entire course that way.

    Looks good to me.

my sister is a spanish teacher, and she says that learning a new language, being as tough as it is to learn inside of a classroom, is just that much tougher online. just my 2 cents.

I took German in high school all 4 years. In college, I decided to keep going, and I learned more in one semester of college german than I did in 4 years of high school. Why? Because classes were conducted entirely auf Deutsch. Since German is such a structured language, you can probably learn a lot of the grammatical rules and vocabulary. But you'll need to converse to really learn it.
