The 2 year lease on my Range Rover Sport ends on December 1st and I'm undecided on what to do. I still love it as a daily driver and there is honestly nothing I want more at the moment for daily use. It's Vesuvius Orange, which makes it a rare find and increases the value over other RR Sports. A few months ago, the dealership was begging me to turn it in early and even offering me $3k (saying they would negotiate that too) in cash if I turned it in early. The buyout at the time was $59k and I saw an almost identical one for sale on Ebay with a "buy it now" price of $69.9k, so it looks like they wanted to give me $3k and turn around & sell it for a quick $7k profit. I turned the offer down because I was enjoying it too much as my daily driver and said I would contact them back when I was ready to get rid of it.

So I spoke to the dealership this week and they said that other than getting me a great deal on a new RR if I turned my current one in, they really had no interest in working something out other than my simply turning the car in when the lease runs out. They said the buyout on it will be about $55k on Dec 1st. It has about 21,500 miles. I'm thinking I should easily be able to get at least $60k for it, so right now I'm leaning towards buying it out and selling it myself.

Not many Vesuvius orange RR Sports pop up for sale, so it's not easy to get a feel for the premiums they pull in over other colors. I do know that they're very sought after though, as only 200-400 were sent to the USA IIRC.

Any opinions or does anybody have any knowledge on what I should be able to get for it? BTW, the one I saw for sale for $69.9k was only a few months ago and had about 16,500 miles on it at the time, so me suggesting that I should easily be able to get $60k for mine is very conservative & realistic.

EDIT: I just checked out DuPont Registry and saw this one for sale for $74k. It says "call for mileage" (which btw I can't stand when ads do that) -

I'll be taking delivery of a new Maserati GT in Feb or Mar, so I could hang onto the Range Rover until then and sell it when the Mase comes in, which would be the most likely scenario.

Clearly sounds like the dealer wants to take away your profits. I would keep it and sell it when you think you are ready too. It is a gorgeous looking color!

Would you have to pay sales tax on $55K? If so, how much money do you think you'd clear on this? Because dealers don't leave money on the table, and they're rarely, if ever, off by the 15-20 percent you're assuming.

They lowered the buyout because at $59K they were going to make plenty off of you on the next lease deal. Also, the buyout may be lower because with oil at an all-time record of over $90/barrel, we're poised for record gas prices and SUV sales aren't looking great. As far as orange, it's a cool color (they offer it on the LR2), but if few people ordered it two years ago then it's reasonable to assume few people are looking for it now. These aren't collectible vehicles.

OTOH, if you need the truck till you get your new car, you could come out better than if your lease payments had continued through Feb. -- i.e., it'll probably still be worth enough in Feb. that you could sell and recoup some of the sales tax.

FWIW, I got a letter today from a major Jeep dealer telling me they desperately needed my (ex) 2005 Liberty and could get me into another Jeep with no cash down. Same old schtick. The Honda dealer did the same on another car 6 or 7 years ago -- they were "desperately short" of the model I had as a used car and could offer me "generous incentives" just to get my car on their used car lot.

The pricing doesn't sound right. I was looking at used RRS Super's a couple of months ago and found many that I could buy for $62-64K with miles in the low teens.

I can buy a new 2008 RR Sport for $58K and RR Sport Supercharged for $65K. Thos numbers do not sound right to me either.

If you decide to buy the RR at the end of the lease you'll have to part with the $55K buyout as well as the 6% Michigan Sales Tax or somewhere in the $58,300 range. Gotta remember that there are days in Michigan where the 599, the 430 and the Maser won't be a driving option. I'd buy it and keep it as it seems to round out your garage for the Michigan climate.

I think, I'd ask for that 3K now. Tell them you aren't dumb and you know that you can sell it for 60K if not more. But tell them, u'd rather have them make some money and you wouldn't have to go through the hassle of buying and selling and shipping the car. If they gave you the 3K, then everyone is happy. If not, Buy it, ebay and take full profit.

The dealer only offered you 3 grand as a hook to get you to lease another vehicle from them.

Its not a real discount or profit.....

    +1.

From what I've seen myself, $60k for an '06 non-supercharged with 20x miles on it is not any kind of special deal, regardless of color. I know the Vesuvius Orange was an extra-cost and limited paint finish, but it's a niche thing and as said before, definitely not for everyone in the market for a Range Rover Sport. I would really double-check those values on it, IMO.

I agree that the numbers don't necessarily add up. I think the guy asking $74k for his Vesuvius RR Sport is ridiculous. I called about it and it only has 6,300 miles on it, but still, I highly doubt he'll get anywhere near that amount.

I know it seems like the dealership was only trying to get me into another Range Rover, but I'm convinced that is not the case bcz the salesman kept stressing "and if you don't want to get into another Range at this time, no problem, we'll still give you a nice offer to break your lease early and let us have the truck now". If it were contingent only on me getting another Range, I would have known the sole purpose for his trying to get my truck would have been to get me into another.

I would indeed have to pay sales tax on the buyout of $55k, so let's say it'll cost me about $58,300 to buy it out. The question becomes can I sell it for a good enough amount over $58,300 on my own to make it worth the trouble of selling it on my own. I hate going through the process of selling a car, but for an extra $3-5k if I can get it, it's worth it. And Buzz you bring up a good point, it'll come in handy when my other cars aren't very practical for running errands, going to Costco, etc... If I do buy it out, I'd keep the Range until the winter was over and sell it then since I would get good use out of it throughout the winter.

Jeff, I'd bet that the dealership had a customer who was actively looking for an orange RR like yours. At the time, they offered to buy your truck because they could have flipped it right away. Now that the buyer is gone, they have little incentive to aggressively go after yours.

I was just going to post a link to it before I saw your post. :) That definitely changes things, as it is obviously not worth the $62k or so I thought I would be able to get for it. Even though mine has 6,500 less miles, it won't fetch much more than this one will.

I talked to a salesman at the Land Rover dealership just now and asked him what the process is for buying the truck out. He said there are 3 fees I'll have to pay, which are -
    $500 lease to retail fee
    $180 documentation fee
    $168 service inspection
Plus of course sales tax, title & license. I told him those above fees seem like nothing more than them trying to pillage their customers. He said he would "see what he can do".

I also told him to get me a price on a new 2 yr lease for a black RR Sport, as I know prices have come down substantially since I got mine 2 yrs ago. But since I love my Vesuvius orange one so much, I'm leaning towards just buying it out and keeping it until I'm ready to get into a new daily driver. Only this time not expecting to make out well like I was thinking I might when I created the tread.
