I am looking at a car where the CarFax shows that the car was leased from new and only has one owner. I am not too familiar with leasing but understand that to it is pretty common with higher end cars. Question, when it is leased, does carfax show the car as owned by the lessee or lessor? Is it possible that Carfax shows one owner (leasing company) but the car have multiple lessors as long as the leasing company always kept the car?

Carfax follows the number of registered lessees. It is very rare for a car to be leased, then re-leased by the same institution.

What if the car got repoed? Is it then sold at an auction or can they re-lease it?

Untrue......a good leasing company (talking expensive cars here) will have a portfolio of clients and their units that they constantly keep leasing over and over to different customers as they get turned in. Dealt with a leasing company that specialized in high end cars and exotics for 15 years that did just this. As a dealer I have resold the same car up to 3-4 times to different owners over a 7-8 year period as well.
