Hello everyone, I just got back from the Navy recruiting office in Las Vegas a few hours ago. I setup all my information and took the practice ASVAB test. I got such a good score on it my recruiter said that I would be eligible for almost any job in the military. So now they're sending me to San Diego (my home town) to go to MEPS and get my physical and to take the real ASVAB test, among other things. Of course they are paying for everything! After that they'll set me up with boot camp and hopefully I'll get to leave right away. So for the two months I'll be in boot camp (Great Lakes, Illinois) there will be no FChat for me! That's going to be rough! LMAO I havn't gone without this place for any period of time longer than a week before. At least its for the best cause, though. Wish me luck!
Congratulations. I got out of the Navy in Sept '04 after five years in submarines. It was a rewarding career but it was time for me to start another. And contrary to another's post in this thread, I definitely did NOT wish I had joined the Marines! If you choose submarines, keep in mind that whatever job you go with, you'll get paid more than the surface fleet equivalent and you can advance up the ranks much faster. It's still rough though. I sometimes had to go weeks, sometimes up to 2.5 months with no sunlight or blue skies. Ah well that's enough of the rambling. Have fun at Great Lakes, and fair seas and following winds!
Congratulation! It is an honor to serve this country. Thank you for your willingness. Our prayers are with you. Spec. 5 Leonard U.S. Army 1970-1976
Good luck to you & enjoy! Did 6 years as a nuc on subs & don't regret any of it - well, maybe telling my CO to FO, but not by much At least I didn't throw a reactor plan manual at him like someone else did!
HA! We have a funny guy in the house! Sorry, I'm a Navy brat. Plus, I've never gotten along with the jarhead-mentality.
Jesus, that could have killed him! Doug congrats and thanks for volunteering!! As a civilian employee of the Navy for way too many years now I would echo the comments made above. Go for sub-duty, better pay, advancement and conditions across the board. Thanks Again, and Fair seas and following winds!!
Lucky. I always wanted to be in the Navy since I was a little kid. My parents took me to the USS Alabama when I was about 4 or 5, I was hooked. Remember it like it was yesterday. I almost joined after I graduated HS, but family crap came up and I decided I better stay around them for a while. Now I'm 20, married, about to go tocommunity college, and I deliver pizza out of a 35 year old, broke-down VW. I mean, who wants to go see the world, get great benifits, have an awesome career and serve their country anyway.... Why didn't I join again???? Cheers, Joel
Anchors away, my mate. Anchors away. My dad went your way about 65 years ago. He never regretted it. However, I will always remember his advice, "Don't drop the soap in the shower." You have made a great choice. I am proud of you. Dale
I thought the soap thing was in prison? You know what they say now though in the military, "Don't ask, don't tell"!! Oh and technically it's "anchors aweigh". Originally meant the anchor was (aweigh) lifted off the bottom and would have been noted in the ship's log that way. A little trivia for you!! Spend enough time around a bunch of sailors and you learn a FEW things at least. By the way Doug if you ever wind up in the yard at Puget, look me up. John
Wow Doug! Best of luck! Let me know if you need anything while you're at Great Lakes. We're just 20 minutes or so South of there. Jack
If you do infact do very well on the ASVAB, go Nuclear. You might get stuck on a Sub but its the best pay in the Navy for enlisted, accelerates your promotion process (ie, pay grade) and moving up to Officer is easier. They also pay a very nice enlistment bonus.
Wow! Congratulations! You are going to do terrific -- we are all behind you 100% Haze gray and underway!!
You're right, of course. My bad. I guess that I had a senior moment. Although in my defense, it has been many, many years since I lived on a Navy base. Dale
