I am putting together my order and with what I have in mind a non CF steering wheel would look better.

Is it possible to have the LED in "standard" wheel and are there any drawbacks?

I would appreciate your input - thanks a lot!!

Stick with the CF - would be shocked if the LEDs are offered any other way - Also shocked that you would think that Non CF would look better....

It's doable. Have seen it on multiple cars. I think someone on the forum had this done as well

Yes its possible. See link for a picture of mine. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/458-italia-488/446339-my-new-2014-spider.html

I preferred non-CF wheel because I didn't spec CF in the rest of the cabin, other than the racing seats (to request non-CF racing seats would have been even more expensive). Its just a different cosmetic finish on the wheel so there is no difference in functionality.

Have fun with your order, it is one of the enjoyable parts of the ownership experience. :)

    Indeed possible.

Looks way better this way if you don't go carbon everywhere else inside. No carbon or all carbon.

Yup, my 488 order has the LED steering wheel wrapped in leather, no CF. It is not on the options list, needs to be noted by the dealer when order is placed with F.

The California I am looking at has a standard wheel with LED... Totally possible.

There isn't a piece of carbon fiber on my car because it looks like cheap plastic to me. It doesn't buy its way on aircraft that well much less for better performance in automobiles. Dealers push it to get the "Up sell" but its virtually worthless on trade-in and hence a $30-$40K hit.

I admit I put all the standard option leather possible in my car for the look and the smell and it only cost about $3K extra (headliners, firewall etc). I passed on the LEDs but now I wish I hadn't because they are kind of cool even though I drive the car on the sound and the gauges.

Your choice for no carbon + LEDs is a good call IMHO.

How can you be shocked that someone has a different taste in car interiors than you?

That's really a matter of personal opinion. I don't understand why some combine tan/brown leather like Cuoio, Testa Di Moro or Beige leather with carbon, or put carbon in a GT like the Cali, F12 or FF. To me, that's like wearing a nice tailor made suit but finishing it off with a pair of Nike sneakers and Oakleys. And if the steering wheel is the only thing in the car that is carbon while the rest is the aluminium bits, to me, that really looks out of place.

I did the same with my carbon fiber-free 458 Spider. Special request to wrap the LED steering wheel in leather.

I am putting a car together without the use of CF ( except the racing seats).

    Blue Corsa,
    Aluminum calipers,
    Aluminum dials,
Black interior - blue media stitching
Gold Rake seats with racing stripe to match exterior.

I think the standard steering wheel will look great but would like the LED's

Carbon fiber ruins the tactile sensation of an otherwise leather steering wheel. To me, the steering wheel should be about feel, not fashion.

If you intend to drive the car and enjoy spending many hours on it as you make it a high miler, then get an all leather covered wheel. If you just use your car for Cars and Coffee and a few short trips then you might be quite happy with carbon fiber partially covering the wheel.

The LEDs are nice to have, so it's good to be able to get them without carbon fiber on the wheel.

fortuitous timing of that pic...I have to sign off spec tomorrow.

The wheel is the only interior or exterior carbon piece of mine (other than the seats). The dealer said that they had never seen a non-carbon wheel and it would be a big issue at resale. (I know they all say that, but they didn't try to convince me on any other carbon)

I have found that LEDs are very useful in turbo cars especially, and that leather one looks spot on. I'm guessing it won't be any cheaper than the carbon one for some reason? ;-)

Non-LED may be a resale issue for some, but not an LED wheel in leather. Get what you want. The fact that your dealer does not know about, or have ever seen the LED leather wheel is a bit shocking - especially since he talks about its effect on resale without any knowledge. And the fact that he is against it due to resale with zero experience, would make me walk and go someplace else. In other words. It sounds like he does not care about what you want and need. Idk, maybe he's just too lazy to put in the effort to make it happen. Not very reassuring...

Thanks, and I do know what you are saying, (and not one for excuses...) but overall they are good guys.

Originally I had all carbon interior pieces but then took it all out, and they said I should leave the wheel. If I'd built the spec from scratch without carbon, there's less of an excuse.

They could have maybe thought harder I agree, but I just don't think it's something they've seen. (UK dealer, usually get black interior and lots of carbon)

Anyway...have emailed to spec wheel and rounded it off with leather backing to race seats to finish off the Carbon completely!

Very interesting. Looks great. It seems the aluminum used on the 488 wheel is darker.

Would you mind sharing how much it costs to wrap the leather on the race seat backs? At the time I specced my 458, it was not presented as an option. I was told that to replace the CF backs with the plastic like the standard seats would have been crazy expensive!
