I'm not an expert, but I bought a 55" LED 3D TV about a year ago - got sold on the "3D" TV viewing thing.

Unless you like wearing glasses, skip it. Not worth it IMO. I've watched a movie/tv in 3D, about 10 times tops.

If you really want the best Plasma is still the way to go.
Usually more expensive and consumes a bit more power.
I'd go 3D ready if you are going to keep it for years.
Samsungs look sexy but you dont watch the cabinet.
    Pioneer has the best pic.
Pioneer makes them up to 65". Look at Vann's for the best deals.
The top of the line is nice but their second line (of three) is still very very good.
Get a tilting rotating mount if you have any windows; you can "aim" the screen to eliminate most glare.
Mount the middle of the screen just above eye level when seated.

OR If the room is dark look into a projector/screen.
    Now were talking 100" +
For a true theatre experience a screen cant be beat.

I agree on the plasma but there is no more Pioneers. I would look at the Panasonic VT series.
Comes in a 65 inch. If you want a 70 inch you may need to go with an LCD.

Currently with an LG, 60" plasma, opted for non 3D. Price savings was worth it. But might be worth it for you. It is not a smart tv, I have another device which controls streaming. Price was around 799 from dell.com with free shipping. I would go for the largest you can, while forgetting smart features and 3D unless you want it.

I purchased a 60" Panasonic Plasma a few months ago (TC-P60GTG50) and I'm very happy with the choice. The detail is much better than the 40" Sony Bravia LED that I replaced, especially during dark scenes of a movie. It's a 3D TV but I've never used the feature and don't plan on it either, I bought it because it had the best picture and most positive reviews for the money.

Thank you so much. Trying to avoid plasma as am single and 140 pounds. Lifting the damn tv is going to be a big deal. :) None of my friends live close to me to help without planning, beer and pizza ! :) Not that, that is a problem !

LED televisions (at least the ones under $10k) aren't really LED televisions yet - they're LCD televisions with LEDs for backlight. Best value is probably a Panasonic plasma - check out the TC-P60ST60 for under $1500 most places. It's right around 70lbs, so not impossible to wall mount alone (although it would be easier with a friend).

The one drawback to many Plasma's I see these days is they are still quite reflective.

Any lightsource behind you will generate significant glare off a Plasma screen.

If the TV is going in a brighter room, or you don't like watching TV in the dark, LED Backlit LCDs are, IMHO, a better choice.

There are a few Top brands in LED tvs... just can't remember them off the top of my head.

I do think Samsung may be one of them.

My tv is mounted on a north facing wall about 10 feet from an east facing wall of windows so the glare issue was a definite concern. I spent a considerable amount of time visiting various stores to see if would be a deal breaker...I decided it was not going to be a problem and after mounting my tv I'm happy to say it's still not bothersome at all.

I still have a 50" Panasonic Plasma TV that I bought in 2004...

In those days I paid $5800...

Still works like a charm. Have been tempted to upgrade to a 60" but the damn thing still works great.

I feel your pain...I paid about $4k back in '05 for my 40" Sony. Oh well, it's the price we pay for being on the leading edge of technology :)

I was looking for a 60" led or lcd as well. I got a 55" panasonic plasma for $750 from costco with an additional 3 year warranty for $60. $810 for a plasma with a 5 year warranty- hell yeah!
The black levels of the plasma couldn't be touched until you get into the high dollar local dimming backlit panels.

I don't know about Sony. They're not what they used to be.

Another Panasonic Plasma owner here. I love it. I may get a Samsung LED for the living room in a few months.

Speaking of the Panasonics, I had an LCD a while back. Hated the thing. It had a smoothing feature I could not turn off. Turned everything into what is know as the soap opera effect. In movies, slow transitions were hurried. Most annoying thing.

Did a ton of research on TVs. Bought a 60 in Samsung Plasma for $800 at Best Buy just before Christmas. Outstanding TV. Don't fall for the Smart TV thing. Buy a Smart Blue Ray and you'll save a ton of money.

My Grandfather was a Sony diehard so I grew up on Sony electronics and my two previous TVs before current Pansonic Plasma were Sonys but niether of them lasted more than six years...unacceptable, IMO.

I'd be hard pressed to purchase another Sony TV ever again.

Up before the sunrise to help a friend move his daughter home for the summer with my F150.

    Sold my 73 Camaro.

    Had a busy morning.

Went to BestBuy. Gave them the model of the Panasonic 65 plasma I wanted. Said I needed another tv, under 50 inches for above my fireplace. Interested in getting wall mounts and all the hdmi cables too. I am on a time limit with paint, sheet-rock, work and night school.

BestBuy had to order the tvs, would take 4 +days. And i had to come back into the city to get them I never go into the city anymore. Detest it, and the traffic.

Walked into HHGregg. Young man asks if he can help me. Told him what i wanted. He took me to the floor models of the tv's. Showed me how they worked, and I bought both of them, the wall mounts, and all the cables. Got 6 3d glasses thrown in and a good discount for a lump purchase. Spent $2700.00 on a 65 plasma and a 50 3d plasma including all the swag i got with them.

Panasonic is the TC-P65S60. LG is a LM6700 47 inch.

Really surprised the Best Buy guys did not seem to care, and have to order things they should have at least 1 of in the box. HHGregg had several of each I was considering, and the LG was open box and a loaded 3d tv to boot. They even loaded my truck out front and refused a tip. I could have gotten the mounts and cables on Newegg or Amazon, but I hate shopping an need to get my house back together. i have 3 rooms utter in chaos!

Thanks for the help. Will post pics in a week or so as the rooms get done.
