Will probably end up costing more to get a crew out there to clean them out than the 80% savings.

they change the bulbs, but not the scoop thing at the end. a simple cover now to retrofit all the lights again should whipe out a lot of that savings.

They need heaters in them like the mirrors on cars now. But that will probably cost them their savings from going to LED in the first place.

I'm a traffic engineer in Wisconsin and this is not nearly as big a deal as the article leads you to believe. The signals are rarely obscured and even more rarely for any length of time. Even incandescent signals can be obscured by snow under the right conditions.

Which is worse - An LED light that is obscured by snow for a few minutes during a blizzard or a burnt-out incadescent that stays out for days?

The cost savings that go with using LED signals is huge - thousands of dollars per intersection per year.

Exactly.... also, correcting the problem when necessary is all that needs done, not going back to old technology.

With anything new, there is always a plus and a minus... this is the minus of LED's. The pluses are massive by comparison, however.
