Re the following extract from The Dino Register, can you assist with my question below? "British versions were identical to the European versions except they had right hand steering controls and were fitted with amber color front signal lenses. Other markets may also have used the amber lenses." My Dino 02424 has RH Drive and amber lenses. However the engine/boot cover release levers are on the LH side of the cabin. Question: If the car was a British version would the release levers be on the drivers i.e. right hand side of car? Anyone have any idea (or knowledge of this car?).
Paul g'day. It sounds like your car was converted. I think the Dinos that came as right hand drive had the shifter in the same place (i.e. you have to reach across the ashtray to shift right?). My friend had a right hand drive Dino and the pulls for the decklid etc. were on the driver side. The fact that your are on the other side seems to indicate that your car was a left hand drive car that was converted... You should ask NNO to run your VIN as I seem to remember that he has that capability. Even if it was converted, it should not detract from the value if it was a good job..... Best of luck.
Parker is correct. Our RHD car (07412) has the hatch pull levers on the driver's side. Having them on the opposite side would only be a minor inconvenience, and would make replacement parts easier to find. We recently had to replace the lever assembly. Because we could only obtain one for a LHD car (which has cables of different lengths, for obvious reasons), our mechanic had to laboriously graft the existing cables onto the new lever assembly and discard the cables that came with the replacement part. (What had happened was that the plastic backing plate had completely disintegrated.)
Dino registry indicates your car was originally a Euro LHD, and now is a RHD. So looks like it was converted. Bet that was quite the project. DM
I nearly brought that Dino at Shannons a couple of years ago and i remember it well it was defineatly a conversion to RHD but there were so many other bits missing it would be hard to know what was original on it and what was replaced.(Is it all back together now? ) My 71gt came from uk but has the later front bumpers not the early ones that wrap into the panel. Its a fair bet that many Dino's that have been restored have odd bits from various years depending on what was available from dealers on the day, thats assuming they left the factory right in the first place.
Thanks you guys, your feedback is very much appreciated. I was 99.9% sure it was originally a Euro LHD (see below) but thought I'd check; the RHD conversion has been done extremely well i.e. all factory parts and good worksmanship etc (specialist Ferrari mechanics here commenting that the changes were hard to pick - their guess was that the work had been completed by a dealer facility. (In fact Danny), I did purchace the vehicle from Shannons Auctions in Melbourne - sight unseen - with a view to restoring. A subsequent enquiry to Ferrari Australia - who cntacted Ferrari factory Italy - revealed that the car was first delivered to Bologna -unfortunately no idea as to the first owner. Unfortunately apart from that info the cars history is sketchy to say the least, save what is on the Dino Register. The car has in fact proved to be a great catch: Original hide trim, body pretty much completely free of rust, and straight as an arrow. I have had the car completely stripped, and $A10k of (genuine) Ferrari parts and engine rebuild has 02424 ready for new paint - just waiting to hear back from the factory re original colour scheme. In the final context I decided that while the car was completely disassembled I would relocate the lever assembly to the drivers side, make good and retrim the leather firewall panel. So...still about another 5-6 months still to go then, Varoom!!! Once again thanks for your all comments and suggestions, Paul. PS Hey Ed, can you inform me what NNO is?
I forget the gentleman's name but I think his screen name on here is NNO. If I remember correctly, he has the ability to run VINs and give info on cars...
Unfortunately he has changed jobs and is no longer available for VIN digging. Can contact the nice folks at www.ferrarimarketletter.com, they may be able to help. DM
