I took my 308 GT4 manual to have the electrical schematic scanned at a local store. They said they were not allowed to scan it in an effort to prevent copyright infringement. I planned to blow it up so I can read it more easily and possibly color code the wires on the schematic. Is this legit / legal?

If I go through the trouble of color coding the schematic, I figure it might be helpful to share with other owners. Is this legal? At what point do my modifications make the document my own (if ever)?

I plan to do some further documenting of my modifications or findings on the schematic… as well as on the other illustrations in the manual since they are sometimes easier to use than pictures. What is the best way to go about doing this properly?

I do not plan on selling the modified documents.

    Thanks for your help,
    Chris

i have a flat bed scanner and p-shop. helps in scanning enlarging and color coding the schematics.

easier and cheaper to do it at home.

Technically they are correct..but just drive down the street and find another copy place.......

FWIW all this stuff is available as free downloads, usually.

I was looking to have the schematic scanned all at once to reduce the time of piecing it together. So far, everything else I’ve done at home.. this just got me thinking about legality. I know stuff is already available for free download; I am just wondering if there is an attainable way for me to distribute / modify the documents legally… because if so, I’d like to follow it.

    Simple answer NO
Diffficult answer Yes if you get Ferrari SPa to license you the material for distribution Odds slightly better in that than finding Tofu hotdogs at a NASCAR race

What i did was download the book in PDF form from the Ferrari Owners website. This way i had a clean 'copy' to be printed without worry of scanning. i took the pdf file of CDR and my local print shop made me hard copies.

Hope this helps as manually scanning and cleaning up each page of a paper book is tedious :(

Back in the 80's my dad was a photographer covering lots of the F-1 races, and naturally I went with him when I could, and I was always a Ferrari fan... we mostly sold the prints and negatives to the editorial/ photo wharehouses... but occasionally kept some for our own use... we had a great picture of Berger at Monza in 87, and I took it to him in the pits to have him autograph it... needless to say he was tied up and I left it with the press officer... and he said they would like a couple copies are they for sale... I said sure, but we will give you a dozen for free, just have Berger sign one for me... then 2 months later my dad gets a letter from Ferrari saying that he is not authorized to sell any photographs of the Ferrari car, logo, or any combination of the two, with out paying a licensing fee to Ferrari... like $25,000 per year... all that for selling maybe a couple hundred posters ( maybe) that was a copy of a picture he owned and made!!!

his attorney said that while they may have a case, he doubted they would actually act, as the $$$ was so small...

and I never did get my autograph picture back from Berger, but have a great letter signed by Franco Gozzi!

lesson is Ferrari dont want you doing anything with their stuff... ever!

writerguy / spirot - so it seems I will not be getting anything approved by Ferrari! I’ll just use the “cite your source” method which should be sufficient for my purposes.

enjoythemusic - I did not realize the Ferrari Owners site had documents for download. I signed up but am waiting for confirmation… I’m interested to find if they have anything other than what Gerrit has at http://www.dino308gt4.com/ for the GT4.

Oh yea, they are all there!

The only problems I have encountered is that mine, 1977 was just an insert, with a few pages and the electrical updates from the 1976 manual.. Luckily the schematic was there!

So in my case 1976 would be the more helpful, but i cannot access it! LOL!

I have a hard copy, two actually.........

I stitched together a wiring diagram from 1976 Euro GT4 as a pdf file. It is on my web site.

The Ferrari Owners site has the owners manuals, nothing else (last time I looked was last year though). It is worthless to blow up the wiring diagram in their scanned version, too low a resolution in first place. My copy has been plotted/printed to D size.
