I never figured Leica to be competitors with sony, nikon or canon. They've always had their niche market that caters to hardcode enthusiasts that cares less about specs.

You're right, but now specs are not an issue..The Economy is sour and the picture quality of the NEX 7 is class leader..

NEX 7 is targeted at the M series...

Sony always had an Ego to dominate...no dif now!

Personally, I wonder why they haven't just settled on being the ultimate niche lens mfr. The market is too crowded with digital SLR's, and mirrorless cameras... Not enough 16 blade F.9 50 mm lenses :)

Sorry but Leica isn't really chasing anyone yet alone Sony. Anyone who wants and can afford a Leica is still going to buy a Leica over anything Sony is selling regardless of format and pricepoint.

I think it's a bit of a leap to think a nex7 is cross shopped for a potential M buyer given the vast difference in price and format. An M buyer may have a nex7 as a pocket camera that they can share lenses between the bodies.

As for Leica making bodies, I don't think that will ever stop and shouldn't. There is no reason not to offer a full system to utilize their optics and I really do not think they are worried too much about the "competitor's" that come to market. If you want a Leica you simply pay the freight and get on with it. One could call them the f-car of the camera world.

Sorry, Just a little too coincedental..Nex 7 carries 24 MP, and now Leica releases comprable..
I agree those who buy leica dont care of cost anyway...but for those who lust of having an M9 or this new M...sure will be a lot easier to afford $2500.00 compared to $12,000.00 +
    an achieve similar results..
Personally...I want the M9 so bad I can taste it...$8,000.00 for the Body , and $5,000.00 for a lens...manual at that.

Lets compare it to the New Nissan GTR or Lexus LFA chasing the new Ferrari f12
    close but no cuban

I have a M3 in an almost new condition. Apart from still being film it is perfect. My grandfather bought it about 50 years ago. I have no idea how a CMOS sensor ages, but if it lasted that long one could almost justify even the insane price of a present digital M. Future generations eyes won't differ from todays eyes. 24 MP will be enough forever. Even the 18 MP of the M9 will, unless ones standard printout size is similar to a living room wall.
