Aparently these 2 days, a formula one car has been driving around london (Picadilly Circus) to asses the possiblilty of London hosting an endurance race around the city. Similar to the Monaco circuit i guess. That would be awesome

    London to host grand prix?

Tue Jul 6, 1:49 PM ET

LONDON (Reuters) - London should have its own Formula One grand prix through the city centre like in Monaco within a year, some of the sport's top drivers said.

Their comments add weight to remarks by Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone, a critic of Britain's only grand prix circuit at Silverstone, who has hinted he would like to see a race in London.

"A lot of countries have two grands prix -- so why not have one in London?" former world champion Nigel Mansell told reporters on Tuesday gathered to watch eight Formula One teams drive in a parade down Regent Street, through the capital's main shopping district.

"London is one of the top capitals in the world and so to stage an event like that would just be sensational," added Mansell, who was world champion with Williams in 1992. "It could be ready within one year, it's just a question of having the will."

"To have a London grand prix would be a fantastic spectacle," said BAR's driver Jenson Button.

"Especially with the buildings here, the noise of the cars would be fantastic."

Williams' Juan Pablo Montoya suggested the city's Hyde Park Corner should be part of the route.

"All those corners around there... even in your own car that's really fun," he said.

Silverstone, a World War Two airfield, hosted the first Formula One grand prix in 1950 but its facilities are antiquated compared to more modern venues.

The leader of Westminster Council, Simon Milton, said he would love to bring the grand prix to the city centre.

"Today is a taster and we'll see how it goes," he said. "We're ready and keen to start discussions about bringing the grand prix into the centre of London."

British Racing Drivers' Club chairman Martin Brundle sounded a note of caution.

"There's a chance there's not going to be any British grands prix after this year," he said, referring to ongoing questions over the future of the Silverstone track. "We've got a lot of work to do. We have to be very careful we have one, let alone two."

The organisers of the Regent Street parade temporarily welded shut over 100 manhole covers to make the road safer for the drivers.

But Montoya warned the streets were still bumpy and he would be aiming for smoky wheel spins rather than speed.

He also admitted the drivers had not paid the city's congestion charge, a controversial fee for driving in central London.

"I think the team will have to pay the fine," he said.
