I have been a big user of Zaino products for car care for about 10 years, starting with my black '99 911. But yesterday I heard/saw something that I had not heard before - Lemon Pledge as a final exterior wipe-down.

I guy here at the marina had a '99 Vette, which I had not seen here before, and was cleaning it for a good bit of the day (I was embarrassed by his gorgeously clean Corvette a few parking spaces from my 328 which was very dusty, with splotches of random seagull droppings. :)

Anyway, I was looking at his car, thinking it was brand new and he told me it was a '99 with 46k miles. The thing was absolutely spotless and looked perfect. I asked him what sort of car care product he used. He said, "the last thing applied to the car is lemon pledge."

He said it's better than detail spray (certainly cheaper too) and has been doing it for many years. I don't know if it was the pledge or luck but I have NEVER seen a 10+ year old car with any mileage on it look like that. I mean really, it was like a new show car finish but it has never been repainted/repaired. He says it's primarily the lemon pledge. I asked him what sort of wax (or whatever) he used and he was using Mother's at this time but uses others as well. He had never heard of Zaino (seems like few people have).

I'm going to see if we have any lemon pledge on the boat! :)

Anybody else heard of this? Maybe it's pretty common but it was new to me.

Yes, after looking at his car I was shamed into cleaning the 328!

I learned the same thing back when I hung out with the muscle car crowd. Pledge works awesome for that final wipe down once you get to the show.

Another trinket they showed me was the big car squeegee, for wiping off the majority of water before you towel dry. I thought it would tear up the paint. Now I use one every time I wash it.

Sure, Heard of this and even had tried it a few times on my Harley..
    Works good, its wax..
Dont know what additives are in ther besides wax. Your 328 is a single stage paint (no clear coat) so I would test on a inconspicuous area first.

Mike ... Agree Zaino is great stuff and it was the only thing that made my black NSX look great. I used it on my 308 (Red) and it improved the shine and depth by a mile. For anyone that has not heard of Zaino you may want to check it out.

I too have never heard of using "pledge", but what the heck I'll give it a try on a lower panel and see how it looks.

thanks for the tip ... Bob

Do not put pledge or pledge over-spray on your sealed garage floor...it is VERY slippery.

It works good on table saw tables too BTW, no rust and the wood doesn't hang up.

    To all,

I use Lemon Pledge on the dash on my 308.

Of course I spray the towel outside the car first, then rub down.

Leaves a "clean" shine on the black.

Works great for shows, it does evaporate in the sun and needs to reapplied every few hours.

Best use for it: Making your tires black without that shiny look like a lot of tire dressing give you.

Shiny tires will cost you points in concours events, plus shiny tires look at tacky to me as girls wearing low back dresses with a huge old bra strap showing...

I remember back in the 80's - 87 or 88, I was hanging out in the Lotus pits, and when the car would come in for a check and the drivers got out, they would wipe down the car with Lemon Pledge - this was in both Canada and Detroit.

Never did it on my car though

I've heard of it before in the 2-wheeled crowd. I suppose they have a smaller surface area to clean, though. Never thought about using it on a car - perhaps due to the shelf (over)full with cleaning products, polishes, and waxes in my garage!

The airplane guys use it to wipe down the leading edges of the wings after a flight. Also they use it to clean the plexiglass windows.

You might try baby wipes to clean the surface before you apply the Pledge. Some pilots wipe down the leading edges before using Pledge. They claim that it helps keep bugs from sticking to the paintwork.

I just use the pledge. It seems to work for me.

So does it work better in your opinion than detail spray (or whatever name given by the various manufacturers)? The Zaino detail spray (only one I have used) leaves the surface extremely slippery. If I put a clean cloth on the middle of the hood, it will usually slide down to the radiator louvers.

Not a big fan of the large squeegee. Doesn't seem to work too well unless you have a "flat" car. Even my square off SUV I have problems with. It's collecting dust in the garage.

I suppose that people's recommendations are going to be based on the condition they define as good or great. Most of the stuff I hear is do right dangerous to modern paint systems, but most people don't know what truly good paint is supposed to look like.

    Regarding Pledge...

It will not harm your paint, it is designed to protect coatings that are similar (in some ways) to automotive paint.

Is it better than a detail spray? There is no yes or no answer, there are many detail sprays out there are nothing more then soapy water but there are also a lot of very high quality detail sprays that add protection against the elements.

There are many better alternatives though. Look at Blackfire Spray Carnauba if you are into the whole areosol thing, otherwise Optimum Gloss Enhancer and Detail spray is going to be hard to beat.

Zaino has both Z6 and Z8 and both work extremely well.

I personally would never take advice from guys at car shows on how to maintain their cars, I cannot even attend most car shows because the general scratched and swirled up condition of the paint makes me sick. Nothing is worse then listening to a guy brag about his detail secrets while his paint is a scratched up mess, his tires look like they have three feet of shiny goop on them, and you can leave a hand print on the vaseline covering his dash board.

Can you use Pledge? Sure... Is it the reason that guy's car looked good? Nope.
