Hy everyone, especially to German friends.
I am thinking about installing a catalyst on my 1986 328 GTS. Only offer I could find is from:

    LENZ Motorentechnik
    Ottostrasse 2
    D-85622 Feldkirchen
    Web: www.lenz.de

Does anybody know/had business with them?
    Any feedback appreciated.
    Ciao and thanks in advance.
    Eugenio

    Hi Eugenio
Any reason why you want a cat on your 328? Or are you just being a good environmentalist?

For your car (non-cat?) I think it might be quite difficult to put a cat on. You also need the injection control from a later car to adjust the fuelling in conjunction with the lambda sensors.

    Cheers
    Simon

    Eugenio,

Have you gone mad? Why do you want a cat on your car? Please don't start about the environment after all these years that you have burned kerosine into the air.

    :)

    My dear friends,
I did not got crazy overnight, neither I decided that my driving is killing the planet.
The reason for this "crazy action" is that in Italy it is getting more and more difficult to drive a non cat car. A lot of local authorities are banning them from open roads invoking excessive pollution. Just to give you an idea, there is the project to outright ban non catalytic cars from circulating in Tuscany...

Due to that I must begin to consider the conversion of my little one.
As far as the technical side is concerned, Simon is right. I must replace the ignition system as well and its cost is included in the almost 6000 € I have been quoted by Lenz for the upgrade...
The problem is that, not speaking German, I do not understand what is written in their website!!!
I hope that I will not be obliged to do this, but regrettably I must be prepared.
    Ciao
    Eugenio

Isn't it easier to buy a Swiss or US 328?

As usual the problem is the italian bureaucracy. Import taxes are such that, buying from another country, makes cheaper to consider the modification.

What about a later italian car? Was the total production non-cat?
BTW I'm selling mine Eugenio. I'm curious what prices are you looking at to import a Swiss car?

Just think that when importing a car you ave to pay the 18% of VAT on the estimated price of the car. In addition to that you have to re-register the car at a cost, for a 328, of around 1000€.
As far as the 328 for italian market were concerned, no cats there!
Just think that even the first batch of 348 was without cats...

    No,

I think that the 348's had cats. Why do you have to pay 18% VAT on a car from another country for which somebody already payed tax?
If I can prove in Belgium that somebody in another country has payed tax on the car then I pay nothing. Are you very sure about the 18% VAT? To me it seems in conflict with the European law.

    Ton

btw: I hear that Simon is selling his car for 20.000 CHF :)

I think Ton is right (apart from the 20,000 bit). If its outside the EU then there is tax to pay.

    Ciao Eugenio,

I am still living in Munich. I know the porducts from LENZ. I had the idea also a few years ago with the 328. My reason for it was the approx. 30 HP more power and in the 2nd step the cat.

What do you want to know about the LENZ product? I will try to translate it to you.

    Ciao

    Roland

    Simon,
I did not know that Switzerland was part of the EU.... Joking clearly, but that is the reason why I have to pay taxes: import from a non EU country.

    Roland,
Thanks for the offer. If you go on Lenz website www.lenz.de and click on Ferrari, there is a short description of the mod package. At leasst I need to understand what that is.

    Ton,
This is just a memory unsupported by evidence, but I recall having read that as little number of 348 was produced for Italy without the cat. As legislation changed suddently (nothing new here...), Ferrari was forced to modify the home market production adding cats. Again, read on an article long ago.

    Ciao
    Eugenio

    Eugenio,

Why don't you upgrade to a 300hp 348 TS? With cats of course.

Reasons are many, but mainly is look and running costs. In Italy after 20 years you stop paying road tax (550€) and, mainly, you are entitled to access to the classic cars ensurance. In my case this second little rule saves thousands per year.
On top of that, 348 seems to have allways little problems that, knowing myself, won't be acceptable.
So we are back to square one: try to make road legal my little one...
    Ciao

I do not know if Italy will be like in Spain, but one should think that it should be about the same accross the EU. In Spain you have to pay the country VAT (16% in Spain), only if you buy the car from a dealership that has that car registered at their name.

However you have to pay no VAT if you purchase the car from a private owner.

Therefore with exotics what most dealerships do, is having the cars in exposition for the owners, and taking a percentage of the sale, instead of increasing the price of the car in the VAT.

    - Julio.

    I understand you Eugenio.
Let's make your baby road legal again.

You have to contact Wolfgang. He said something about the price to me today.

    Hello Eugenio,
    hello F40org (again),

if you PM me your e-mail address I can send you a 845 KB pdf from Lenz.
It contains a lot of grafics + specs about his 3.2 l motronic.
(couldn't find the pdf on his site anymore)
I can offer to translate the most important lines for you.
Once I was in a similar situation with my 328 GTS and went with a 355 :)

Disappointingly, perhaps it got lost in the italian mail system.
It would not surprise me a lot.
If I will not receive it by then, I will personally ask you a copy.
