More pics of new stuff. Now comes the labor part. I will have to clean all 48 valve spring seats, 48 spring retainers, springs. All 48 valve tappets. Then install everything, then set the cams.. Lamborghini gives 30 hours just to do one(1) head. If it were not for the cleaning I have to do, I might be able to trim a few hours off of that time. Basically the same oil they were using when these cars were made, just different additives and EPA ratings.
Well, you start with all the little bits, and after time passes you end up with this. Head # 1 done. Tomorrow I will spend the hours cleaning all the little bits, then organize everything. After both heads done will spend the heavens knows how many hours setting the cams, fun job. Walnut shells are not quite aggressive enough for that. I have used them for years for many things partially because I find the look of a bead blasted alloy casting offensive and it can never look right again but for rust they just don't cut it.
Well now you have seen bits and pieces of the valves and ect. Now the fun begins, setting the clearances. Lamborghini gives 30 hours to do one (1) head complete, now I see why..Cam on cam off, cam on cam off. There is suppose to be a tool the be able to change shims with cam on, but I have never seen one. So cam on cam off. Just glad I have 100's of shims, so I will have fun. what method do you use to get the retainers on the back of the valves? ive had pretty good luck with a ziplock bag and socket but im sure there is a better way.
See the attached, this is what I use. If you want one, I think I remember where I got it. I will get you one if you want. Chad Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Back at it. 1st pic shows pistons installed, DO NOT forget to TDC and mark flywheel/block in case you have to move crank. Next you want to install the windage tray, there is no torque spec in any manual for nuts holding tray in place, so I use 20 ft lb. Each nut has a flat washer and a lock washer under them. Then install the oil pick up tube, do not forget to use pn # 8602901 "O" ring in the grove, I always use a bit of sealer on the "O" ring, just for luck. Also use self locking nuts to secure to tube to the block. I also install a flat washer and a lock washer, maybe overkill, but better than have tube come loose. Then secure tube to windage tray, again I use flat washer and lock washer. While you are at it, BEFORE you install windage tray, go over the main bearing nuts again, checking the torque. The big ones torque to 65 ft lb. The 8 mm ones 24 ft lb, and don't forget the cross bolts(this is for QV only) they torque to 43. ft lb. Then just to make sure I also check each rod bolt torque which is 47 ft lb. Only takes a few minutes, a few minutes never wasted. Now that pistons are in and at TDC, lets start installing a head. 1st install the chain, and pull it up so it does not fall back into block. Next the spacer plate, then the "O" rings and "O" ring string that must be installed on plate. Next, I always make an angle cut where the "O" ring string will join later. Next, I put a dab of sealer on plate so "O" ring string stays in place. Then, and some may say this is not needed, but see pic of block, you will notice the place where the string will set, is not smooth, therefor I put sealer on all "O" ring and string. Then I place a dab of silicone where the string meets, never hurts to do that, better now than a leak later. Then bunch the chain up, so it will not be in the way before installing the head. I've recently found out that silicone RTV sealers tend to slip on rubber, rather than stick... Great build, Chad!
Hei, to connect the rubber-cord you need a special tool and some glue. Look here for example: https://www.hug-technik.com/shop/product_info.php?info=p500265_o-ring-kit-nbr70-19-teilig-zur-eigenfertigung-von-rundschnur-ringen.html You can buy this rubber cord in any length, cut an close it as you need it. This is technical correct. Or you order it in the fitting diameter and let it vulcanize, this is better for high temperatures. Best regards Martin
Today, well 1 head sitting on block, that is just the start of the fun. Oh by the way, see pic of drain plug, do not forget to replace the copper washer with a new one or just anneal the old one, works just a good, as new. Next pic the head nuts, where do they go well see pic, they are hidden under here, see pic. These are fun to install, I know of no tool to make job easer, you just need nimble fingers, and patience. The really fun part is you need to turn nut on the stud as much as you can. See pic of factory tool, with it, if nut is not run down just about all the way, the factory tool is a pain. See pic of tool I made, crude, yes, but it works. Also in last pic, notice difference in the tools, mine is thinner, allowing access to the nut even if it is not run all the way down. Now the next part of the fun, is you can only turn nut maybe a flat at a time. Take forever to torque the nuts. Yeah, we had similar tools made. There's a bad stud in front of the right cylinder head, it's hard to tighten due to some casting sticking out of the gear chain side.
