The best pickup strategy I'd employ would be to sit in a corner of a club/bar by myself and make occasional (but strong) eye contact with the girls I found attractive.

Friends thought I was nuts, but the ones I wanted came up to me 9/10 times and I'd pretty much steer it from there. Sometimes groups of girls would invite me over but most of the time it was just one or two.
