So I think I'm going to have to let my 97 355 spider go and with all the price BS lately I have no idea what to ask. This is not a for sale add i just really need some advice. What do you guys think?

97 spider 37,xxx miles yellow with black top and interior.

Top is basically brand new, rest of body and paint is like a 5 or 6 out of 10. Looks awesome from 10 feet but it's covered in rock chips and the front bumper has taken a few speed bumps. I might be being a bit harsh on it but it's been driven all over rural Montana / Dakotas etc.
Has the 3 piece speed line dealer option rims, tires have 6k miles.

Newer pads and rotors and e brake parts.

Mechanicaly it runs like a top but has no records and I believe the last major was in 2004. Very due. Has Fabspeed headers, gutted main cats, and Tubi exhaust. The ECUs are retuned for more performance and the rev limiter is set at about 9200 rpm.
Clutch has 6000 miles on it.

Interior is decent, has some sticky parts and light bolster wear on the drivers seat but no dash shrinkage and the air bag leather looks good. I have a MACarbon steering wheel on it and hill dead panel and passenger foot plate. CF mirror triangles on the inside.

So let me have it. What would you try to get out of it? Thanks.

I'm not an expert like most here but doesn't sound favorable. You might get more if you did the stickies and the major done before you sell it.

6 spd or F1? Valve guides? A/C blowing cold with no issues? With a major not having happened since 2004 and little service history, I'd be concerned about a lot of deferred maintenance. Plus, one would have to account for cosmetic issues.

I paid 47k for a 98 yellow/black top 6sp spider with 44k miles, Larini exhaust, fab speed headers, valve guides done and sticky done. Top is manual, paint is a solid 8/10 and major was negotiated in price. I think I got a stellar deal on mine(this was 2 months ago) and cars like yours seem to be advertised or are getting bites at 48-50k with it needing a major that bad. I think paint condition, accident history(if any) and service history are the 3 biggest deterrents on the car when it comes to price. Just my 2C :)

I wish, having a couple vertebrae fused and need cash fast.

Did they make F1s in 97? I thought they started in 98. It's a 3 pedal at any rate and AC blows cold.

I thought it was introduced with 1997 model year, which is why I asked. But I could be wrong and wouldn't wager much on it if I had to bet.

I'll be interested to find out what you get for it since I have basically the same car. 1997 spider in Giallo Modena with black interior, standard five spoke wheels. Just turned 37,000 miles this week and the exterior is about an 8. Unlike yours, I just did an engine major and clutch within the last 18 months and the engine was completely overhauled at about 24,000 miles (during previous owner) so valve guides and exhaust manifolds were replaced. Everything, including the top, works great and I am planning to redo the interior this winter just to get it more in line with the condition of the exterior.

I'm looking at L4 through S1 getting fused. They said its about an $80,000 surgery and my insurance only wants to pay 60%.

I just bought my daughter a better car for college and paid her tuition.
Bought a 348 spider project and a parts car to help build it. Because I thought I was getting a head of things and looking good. Now this, I don't do debt so it looks like the 355 needs to head to a new owner since I think it would be the easiest sell of my cars.

Yeah, I've been planning to do the stickies for 3 and a half years just haven't put it high enough on the priority list. With a little work I could get the interior to a 8 or 9 out of 10.

I actually have a full major service kit and a bunch of extras like silicon hoses etc etc ready to go. I was going to do the major myself for myself.

Now looking to sell it there are a lot of people out there who would consider my home major of no value even if it was just done and want to take it to a "pro" anyway. So it might be a waste of time and effort.

I'm in the situation now were I have the next two weeks off then work two weeks away from home then going for surgery. Sounds like I'll be down and out after that for some time.
I am in the same boat as you here in the middle of no where. If we don't work on our cars ourselves who the heck would we trust to do a major. Theres not a shop within 500 miles of me that's ever worked on a Ferrari.
I might be at the point now that I'm just out of time and have to wait until spring until I can unload her and get myself back ahead.

It's not as bad as it sounds, they will have you walking in 2-3 days. Inside a month you will be going nuts to do your engine out. The hardest thing is mentally trusting the cages. When the dr says it's good they are good don't look back.

Ins, yeah they suck but the hospital will take what they can get whatever you offer. Try to settle for less on a payment plan. They will be happy as heck. Most folks stiff them.

Lastly, plan this as it were a vacation, it will be over faster then you think and you will feel great

    :)

I am in the same boat I feel you I really do. I am at least 2 hrs away from the closest Ferrari dealer and they both are throwing way different numbers at me for a 30K service.

Believe me I am more than willing and capable of doing my own Major, If I could drop my motor and take it in to a dealer and have them do it Id be happy but you can't they won't touch it. The Majority of the cost is the Very easy but time consuming engine drop and then putting it all back together and filling it up.
My car had a major back in 2007

The Major really is so stupid easy on these cars it is mind blowing that people make them such a huge deal. Its just preventative maintenance it shouldn't be the cash cow for a Fcar dealer.

I know what your saying about if you did your own major some would look at it as if it never was done, I have my GTS that I want to resell and that's the speed bump I am hitting, If I do it myself whats the point? mostly it will be a waste of time as some people say they want a discount if you even touched your car (tire kickers IMO full of **** usually) but I can see it being a concern.

So what tell them to find another car. You can't fit in a major with everything you have going on in a short time period.

What I don't get is when you say you have a 355 and everyone groans "oh got to drop the motor" like its hard. If anyone should be able to do it fast its the dealer. But I personally feel the older your Ferrari is the further away from the Ferrari dealer it should go.

I wouldn't take my 1990 Corvette ZR-1 to a Chevy dealer to work on it. Not a sole in the place would know how to work on the motor. So I do any work myself. Good thing that overhead cam motor used chains.

The Majority of us don't live in Southern California where Ferrari's are abundant where there is abundant people to work on them.
We don't Live in areas that have a lot of Ferrari's so we are limited on our choices.
The rest of the USA its pretty slim pickings to have service done at some magical dealership to make the next owner all warm and fuzzy.

Unless you live near a Huge Metropolitan area (screw that)

Let them blow their money at their local Shop of choice, They may live closer to someone they trust. I mean if your car had a major just done, Some people on this forum would take the car apart and swap out Brand new Cam Belts to give them a warm fuzzy.

Maybe you will find someone that wants to do their own major like you and many of us have done.

Sell them your spare service kit or sell it to one of us at a discount!

No ones paint here is a 10/10 even if fresh and brand new you can always find flaws.

Any 355 thats driven has rock chips if it doesnt i has no miles or is a recent respray and thats ok. These cars get beat up in the nose.

Thanks for the insight. The insurance is really jerking my chain but I'm ready to pay what ever it takes if the doctors can fix me. My back has been on the edge for a long time but I did some superman stuff and ended its run. It's driving me crazy and I can't think straight. I really want to step in front of a train sometimes.

Thanks for the advise on it everyone. I really don't know where I'm at on it now. Maybe just hold off and hope for the best.
