What's with Hollywood and the never ending rehash of the Superman franchise? First it was Superman the comic book in the 1940s. Then it was Superman the TV series in the 50s. Then it was Superman the movie(s) in the late 70s. Then it was Smallville the Superman TV series. Now its yet another warmed over movie version of Superman.
Has Hollywood just rolled over on its belly and totally given up on any new ideas?

Hollywood producer: "I need some fresh ideas. What have you got?"
    Writer: "What about Superman?"
Hollywood producer: "We did that last year."
Writer: "But we haven't done it THIS WEEK."
Hollywood producer: "That's right!!! I think you're onto something!"
Writer: "How about Jessica Simpson as Lois Lane and Justin Timberlake as Jimmy Olsen?"
Hollywood producer: "Now you're talkin"! But what about Superman himself?"
Writer: "I think Rosie O Donnell is free."
    Hollywood producer: "I LIKE IT!!!"

The comic book is not hollywood.

The TV show is not hollywood.

    Smallville is not hollywood.

I think two sets of movies over a 70 year period is not exactly over-kill. Star Trek, with 5 or 6 TV series and 10 movies over a 30 year period is over-kill.

    Dunno though.

Please--Hollywood stopped trying years ago. They've scraped bottom on re-makes and now are forced to re-make the re-makes. The most entertaining pictures these days are CG movies like "Cars", but even those are the same story over and over with different themes.

They did a whole schpeel on A&E regarding Superman. They felt the time was ripe. It'll probably do well if the storie's good and this new guy has appeal.

I like the looks of it so far. I was skeptical at first, but I was of 'Batman Begins' as well. It turned out great. DC prefers "Quality over Quanitity" as opposed to Marvel's "Quantity over Quality" approach. I believe that the computer graphics are finally capable of allowing the comic book version of Superman to come to life.

With the current boom of comic book movies, and today's technology, expect to see a whole lot more movies based on comics. The first X-Men really got everything rolling but Spiderman turned the genre inside out. Of course there have been some bad ones, Hulk, Elecktra, Cat Woman, etc, but that's gonna happen. Ghost rider doesn't look too promising, at least not yet. Superman will sell like crazy. Soon to start shooting are Wolverine, Batman, Fantastic Four, and I've heard of a Magneto movie. I figure it can't get any worse than Batman with nipples.

Christopher Reeve was so magnificently perfect for the role that it's hard to imagine any subsequent actor who will not be instantly compared to his image [and lose]. Additionally there is the tragedy of Reeve's accident and death, which gives him the same kind of sentimental immortality that similar Hollywood tragedies (Marilyn, etc.) have.

I'm sure this latest actor is a nice fellow and has done his very best, but I still suspect that people will leave the theater saying, "That just ain't Supe."

Lets face it.. The arts are limited. There are only so many stories you can tell over and over in variation. Boy meets girl, boy falls in love, the pursuit, etc.

Action, Mystery, Romance, Drama. Only as events and world history unfold around us do new stories arise, but the basics will be the same. TV and Hollywood have no choice but to rehash old ideas that worked.

Same with music. Music has been dead for years now. Im a rock n roll, heavy metal guy first and foremost. There are only so many riffs and solos (scales) that can be done. Take groups like Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, POD and whatever. They hit hard, have some good tunes. Whens the last time you heard a guitar or drum solo in any of the songs? They are nothing but pedal effect power cords. These bands are making millions on lousy, simple power cords that we heard in the 80's and 90's and throwing the "new fangled" effect pedals.

    The arts are dying..

Wait a minute - My wife's son and I watched one of those in particular - the volume was off, but I'm sure the dialogue was as good as the visuals. Nevertheless, 3 generations (He's 23, I'm 45 - my Wife was loaned this masterpiece by a woman with an 8-year old superfan of this fine, fine film) agree CatWoman is one of the finest films ever made and the lead actress deserved another Academy Award.

You are right "they" are ENTIRELY out of ideas. I can see introducing a new generation to Superman and the computer special effects are so much better to do the super powered scenes some justice.
