It was raining in Colorado Springs on Sunday Oct 9, 2005, as Quickchick Racing's PPIR "Last Lap" event wrapped. That evening, as I unloaded the 550 at my house in Woodland Park, 8,000 ft up in the mountains west of the Springs, it was chilly but not much rain. Monday, there was six inches of snow on the ground. I hand-shoveled my 100ft driveway so I could get the car out for a run and not let the engine/battery cold-soak two days in a row without being started/charged. That's when I discovered I had bought bad gas on the way home from PPIR. The water in the gas was frozen and chunkettes of ice were impeding the fuel pumps and injectors. Tuesday, I made a run down to the Springs for some errands and bought some ISO-HEET to cure the gasoline/water problem. On the way back up the moutain, the water in the gas began freezing again. But three hours after I put it in, the Heet really worked. By Wednesday, the snow had melted and it was another glorious autumn day to be driving a yellow Ferrari (up to Ferrari of Denver to get the CHECK ENGINE computer error codes, caused by the bad gas erased!) Ah, Colorado in the fall! how do F-Cars handle in the snow?... I've never dared to take any of mine past or present out in the snow. It it fun?
I couldn't tell you since I only drive it when the streets are dry and salt/gravel free. But Alex (aleventhal) could fill you in.
I have a bunch of experience with this: -400i (#049773) on bald TRX: Undriveable! Can not go up a gradual incline in one inch of snow - had to make a u-turn (carefully) and go home. -400i on Bridgestone Blizzak: Fabulous. Go anywhere in any weather. What a difference. Drove it 130 miles in an ice storm a couple of weeks ago - no problems. Would not hesitate to drive it in a blizzard. As good on the blizzaks as my wife's audi allroad quattro witih regular all seasons -actually better on ice (to be expected with blizzak) but worse in deep snow (clearance) or really steep hills. -Dino on XWX (#10704): Never meant to drive the Dino in the snow - this was a "fall folliage tour" gone awry. Anyway, car did fine - had to go slow, but the dino with XWX is much better than the 400 with bald TRX - I guess the mid engine layout helps alot. No problem going up hills, etc. in falling snow with accumulations of 1 to 3 inches. Same thing happened when I went up mount Greylock in my old 365gt (#13141) - snowing at the top, but no problems. Hope this helps, Alex
