Well, since I'm in the business I thought it might be nice to see some of the custom Hardwood floors we have. I've come across all kinds of floors from your common oak to exotics like Jatoba (Brazillian Cherry). Here are a few of the jobs I've done. Let's see yours

It's just a spec of dust that is magnified on the lens and radiating because of the flash.

Well I just have to chime in. I have a newer house but didn't like my kitchen floor, so I had it redone and am super pleased. I changed the color to a Charcoal prefinished Maple by Mirage, and what a dream. There are details there that pictures just can't do justice.

I just want to encourage everyone to try something off the beaten path. Sometimes it's worth the risk!

F1Ace, you picked the absolute BEST floor you could! Mirage is top of the line and a real pleasure to work with...It's beautiful! Nice work!

    ROTFLMAO!

    good one.

    j. grande - curious to know if you've ever put down wood floors in a garage, and if so, what sort of finish you put on it.

and what's with the clearcoat finish for wood floors that i've heard called "traffic" which is apparently illegal in some places and purportedly dangerous to apply (fumes)? but hard as nails.

    tia,
    doody.

Beautiful Jatoba!!!! 150% harder than oak! I really like the parquette too. do you remember the name of the design? Was it Montecello?

Doody, I've never put hardwood in a garage but I have put it over concrete in a basement. About 2000sq ft of unfinished Maple. It has to be glued down with a "Mastic" oil based glue which never actually dries fully. It is a very messy job and takes a long time, because you can only do so much and then let the glue set up so it doesn't move around on you.

Traffic (if it is the same one as in Canada) is a waterbased urethane that dries extremely hard. As far as I know it is not illegal but the wave of the future. A top of the line waterbased finish (Dura Seal X-Terra) will run you about $150/gallon. Considering that you have to apply 3 coats of it and a gallon covers only about 300sq ft you understand why it costs more to use waterbased instead of oil. Oil finish can be had for about $100 for a 5 gallon pale, or about $20 a gallon. Waterbased urethane takes about 3 hours to dry whereas oil takes anywhere from 8-15 hours to dry. Waterbased is the wave of the future and California is leading the way in outlawing oil finishes. You can no longer buy a 5 gallon pale of oil based polyurethane in California.

I'll have to get back to you on this one. I just came to an agreement on a house that I'm going to buy. It's 144 years old and has hardwood floors upstairs and down.

I love hardwood floors, and cabinets.. I think that they really give a regal look to a room. I espically like the dark mahogany and teak colors. I have already decided that when I move into a place full time I will have a full library in a mahogany, with dark brown leather arm chairs for reading.

I take it it's pine? Beautiful when sanded and finished in natural satin finish. I've done several century homes, always with pine floors. One was so old the underside of the floor boards still had bark on it! It still had sap in it, 130 years after being installed!

If I had to guess, I'd say that they are pine. The wood is pretty light in color and has a soft appearance and texture. It looks nice. :)

Most likely it is pine, it's not a hardwood rather a softwood and was really never ment to be exposed. Lately however there is a real appeal for "rustic" floors which show all the knots and imperfections (which make the floor beautiful).

Rick, when I first showed up at your house I showed you "Mirage" you chose the "Preverco" :) Get back to screwing...the subfloor that is!
