I am in the process of designing a helmet for karting and track events. I am curious on what everyone's helmet looks like.

You need to make the helmet sort of round to fit your head with an opening so you can see out of it. Then paint it.

Mike that top one you made is quite nice. I saw a helmet that was full cf, would you be able to make a design that incorporates color and cf for the bg?

Yes, I can paint over carbon fiber, leaving part of it exposed for the design. Of course, the example here is just a standard fiberglass helmet -- the carbon fiber was a painted effect.

Thanks! Yes, besides here in the USA, I've sent painted helmets to Canada, Switzerland, Germany, the U.K., and Thailand. No problem. For folks getting new helmets and know what kind they want, I suggest they buy them via the internet at a USA source, and have them shipped to me from the store... saves on initial shipping.

Thank you for the nice comments. I have created all the artwork in digital vector format, and I create multi-part stencils out of them via a vinyl sign cutter. So... when I paint your helmet you get "bragging rights" -- all those elements are painted, not decals, but with sharp edges like Formula 1 style, rather than like freehand airbrush style as if you were having a t-shirt done at the beach.

By the way, I'm an FChat sponsor, and I painted Rob Lay's track helmet for him. See the thread here.

Whats different about an auto racing helmet as opposed to a motorcycle helmet. I ride a BMW motorcycle and have a Shoei Synchrotec flip up helmet, is that not allowed in SCCA or track days?

Fireproofing. (not too important for motorcycle crashes!).

Motorcycle helmets are normally rated to DOT standards and/or Snell Mxx standards (M1995, M2000, or M2005 depending on when manufactured). DOT (street) standards are the lowest of those. Snell "M" ratings are designed for motorcycle track/racing so are better. Snell "SA" (special applications) are designed for auto track/racing and as mentioned, have fire resistant (Nomex) liners but also fire retartant shields if a full-face helmet. They are also designed to a different level of impact protection for the shell and shields, and the shields must have a positive hold-down. For details, you can go to www.SnellFoundation.com, where you'll also see other standards such as for bicycle helmets and Karting helmets.
