I had a jeweller before who i bought diamond jewelry for my wife. She retired and I am looking to buy diamond earings, ring or necklace for her.
I went to a local jeweller but im really dumb about it. Been reading about it but cant get the right info to decide what is the best grade of diamond for an earing, ring or necklace.

    Anyone can simplify diamond shopping?

4Cs of diamonds. Cut, color, clarity, carats. Btw, some women are more impressed with a bigger diamond with lesser clarity, than a little smaller stone with better clarity. I prefer to get better clarity than size. Check with your wife first.

I get my diamonds from Azi. https://www.yelp.com/biz/diamond-collection-los-angeles-4?start=20

What he said (WP0ZZ). My cousin is a jeweler and my friend is as well so I spend a little time around loose gems - not to mention I keep buying for my wife...arghh. I'd add that on earings you really don't have to worry about clarity as much as long as you like the sparkle. No one is going to spot inclusions. If someone is that close to your wife's ear then there are other things to worry about *laugh*. True, if inclusions or the cut is off too much the sparkle will diminish but the diamond on the hand is where the money is spent. I bought my wife a tennis bracelet and even there the diamonds were claimed VS1 (not VVS1 or 2) but when my friend looked at it with his loupe they were truly SI2 but again from 12 inches away it doesn't matter. It brings up a point which is that less reputable places will "over-grade". Lastly with regard to the "4Cs" you can almost make a table of all the variables and come up with a list price for a single stone. It is a trade off and to afford a particular parameter you have to give up on another parameter. Again assembled jewelry like bracelets or earrings are going to usually use lesser stones especially if not Rodeo Drive quality. Stones under 1 carat are generally not graded except the 0.9 ct solitares (a budget-marketing price point). Have fun!

When I need diamonds, I have a jewish dealer who takes me through all the back alleys and private rooms in the LA jewelry mart - an interesting process for sure. Candidly I have not made any substantial purchases in about a decade, so things may have changed.

Unbelievable amount of diamonds there (at least last time I was there).

    This ^^^^

I went down to 48th street in Manhattan (diamond district, lots of Jewish wholesalers) and did a cash deal on the wedding ring for my wife. You wouldn't believe the markup on diamonds! It's ridiculous!!

If you knew the percentage of markup it would make you want to throw-up.

Keep in mind gems and precious metals have gone up in price (regardless of mark-up). Last year with COVID going on demand was strong (surprisingly) as people had not much else to do (heck I bought two cars online). This year prices are up with inflation. On a different note with diamonds at least professional cutting is part of the deal. With some stones like rubies from Myanmar they can't leave the country without being cut (or so I'm told) and thus selection is tougher and quality can suffer considering that those who are cutting/polishing are probably under-age.

Not always. Perfection over size for me.

I feel size over quality is akin to wearing a fake Rolex.

Go to blueniles.com and play around with the specs (cut, color, and clarity). Site should give you close to wholesale price, use that price and go to regular dealers.

Excellent recommendation. Their table is pretty in line with prices, a little above wholesale and they are a reputable source.
