I find it amazing that so many professionals in America wear shoes with chunky rubber soles with their suits...they just look terrible...I do not understand why Americans are so poorly dressed. We have two of the best cities for shopping and advertisng in the entire world: New York and L.A. I work in Vancouver, BC every month and the difference between Vancouver and Seattle in terms of dress is just night and day...no idea why.

For me I love Sutor Mantelassi, Edward Green, Vass, John Lobb, and Crockett & Jones.

Salvatore Ferragamo makes the best shoes I've ever worn.

Yes Ferragamo's Tramezza line is especially good.

I've been a fan of Geox for a while now. They look and hold up just as good as some of the others that cost 3X more but I still love my Pradas. :)

Mephisto makes the most comfortable shoes I have though.

    Lobb's and Testoni's.

For those who like Ferrargamo (and I have many, too), directly from my cobbler, "Ferragamo charges a big price, but the quality isn't there." Take it for what it's worth.

It depends on the line really...the Tramezza line is good quality and generally use a goodyear welt...no they are not on the same level as any of the brands I mentioned but they are better than what 95% of the people I see at work.

I like Testoni's but for me they have to be on a deep discount to be worth it as they generally a blake rapid construction...which looks nice but makes them difficult to resole.

My favorite Testoni's are the Amadeo line, which are the truly hand-crafted ones. Very pricey. I, too, am cost conscious and don't splurge for them at full price unless they are a must have item. Otherwise, I can wait. Same for the Lobbs. On occasion, I'll buy a pair at full retail, but it's got to be something I can get the value out of.

I'm not a shoe guy and certainly not high end, but in more formal shoes I have:

Bally, Church's, and Johnson and Murphy. I like the J&M best but next stop is Mephisto. I need comfort not looks.

It's the same here in the UK! :(

I like my Oliver Sweeney shoes for casual wear and Church's for more formal occasions.

Michael Toschi is a friend and Ferrari owner. He makes amazing shoes that are extremely comfortable. I have a closet full and find them to be more comfy and better wearing then the Gucci, Prada, Ferragamo, Santoni, Bruno Magli that I also keep in the rotation. www.toschi.com check them out, many have styling cues inspired by italian cars.......

Bruno Magli, but I can't wait to try a pair of Lobb's. Looked at the website the other day and they're just stunning shoes.

You're insane. Vancouver has arguably some of the WORST dressed people in the world.

Well maybe you need to come down to Seattle...I am not saying everyone in Vancouver is better dressed but overall they dress a lot nicer than the professionals in Seattle.

So I'm curious, what is considered expensive for a pair of men's shoes?

Depends on the depth of the person buying. At the low end, I expect it would be anything over $150. At the upper end, bespoke shoes can run $3-4,000. Median might be around $400-500

Sorry, should have been "depth of the pockets" of the person buying...

Although moderately priced, I am still a fan of good old American Aldens...simply, "the shoe" if you dress traditionally.
