Lewis Hamilton says the media "will be back on my side" once he starts performing strongly following the criticism he has been subject to.

The McLaren driver was criticised by the British media after his crash with Kimi Raikkonen during the Canadian Grand Prix.

Hamilton had another weekend to forget in France last weekend after having to serve two penalties, one for his Canadian crash and another for cutting through a chicane during the Magny-Cours.

The Briton, who has dropped to fourth place in the standings, was defiant after Sunday's race, saying the press will not distract him.

Hamilton admitted he is not a fan of facing the media as soon as he gets out the car, but the McLaren driver is convinced he will get support when he starts winning again.

"You've just done an hour and a half race and worked your backside off, and then they expect you to sit down and straightaway get out of the car and talk to people," Hamilton told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"Are you crazy? Damn man, I'm knackered! I need a drink! Sometimes I like to do that.

"But I feel that I've had so much support from the media, especially last year and in the build-up to this year, and I know that with the performance that I'll have coming up, I feel that they'll be back on my side and they'll continue supporting me."

This is why I don't understand people that give him hell for not being so jolly after every race with the media. Give the guy a break.

John, all these drivers are paid big bucks to represent their sponsors, without those sponsors they would not be racing. Hamilton needs to get real, he is not alone, the press talks to all of them.

Maybe "knackered" drivers like Hamilton should get a hint what the paying/viewing spectator wants and cheerfully talk to the press as all the top NASCAR drivers do within 5 minutes after the race ends. Even the ones that were in an accident or caused the accident. I think sitting in a hot car at 185MPH for 500 miles with constant g-forces from banked circuits likely leaves NASCAR, and even IRL drivers, "knackerd".

But they ALL talk to the press. Many of them admit their mistakes and even apologize. Lewis has a problem with this. Maybe that is why he wants to avoid the press?

I have no sympathy for Hamilton's remarks. He deserves the flak.

I don't think he said he's going to stop doing it. think he's just trying to get across how he feels, in a playful way. That's how people talk when they're trying to be frank and/or friendly in person. Boy you just love to dissect every little thing Lewis says, don't you? I bet if he says he'd like some Lemonade, you'd be all over that, "I'm sure ALL the drivers would like some lemonade, blah blah blah, fart."

    Anyways, where's Ted?

I certainly understand what you're saying. The way he pushed the camera away after he got back to the garage in Montreal was a bit over the line; consequently, he does, in fact, deserve some of this flak. However, if Kimi were to do something like that, people would just say, "Oh that's just Kimi being Kimi." On the other hand, when Lewis does it, people seem to come down on him pretty hard.

The bottom line is that he needs to get his act together in more than one way.

That's just it. Kimi was never an attention media whore. Lewis is great with the media, when they are on his nuts. Jetting around, promoting his autobiography and things like that when things are going his way. he gets "knackered", when things aren't going his way.

It is obvious you know little about motor racing. The g forces in an F1 car far exceed that in any other type of motor racing. What an individual is paid does not make him any more or any less human

What are you talking about? He gets paid well and he is representing his team including sponsors. If he cant take the flake from the media (and its all his making) then he should get out of the sport. G forces B forces hes paid well and should act it. Arrogance is coming more to mind everytime he speaks especially when things are not going his way.

Ooh. Lewis has a bit to learn about celebrity PR. I hope he doesn't expect much sympathy from the common folk out there for feeling knackered after his 90-minute workday. I know these guys work hard. But so do a lot of people, longer hours, and for a hell of a lot less money and respect. Sorry Lewis. I like you, but you lose this one. I'll say it again: your sumptious dinner of wealth, fame and *****cat dolls comes with a side-dish of media obligations. It's a package deal, and it isn't always a tea party.

Yes, like I said previously, he had no problems with the media when they went along with his good, clean cut, super rookie image. He loved talking to the media.
Now, with things not going his way, he doesn't like talking to them.

With Kimi when he was a fresh faced, super rookie, he didn't care much for the media.
When he came close to the championship and lost it in 2003-2005, he didn't care much for the media. That's racing, he would say.
When he reached his goal and won the world championship, he still didn't care for the media. He smiled for a camera, once I think.
Season not going as planned? That's racing. Plus, he doesn't care about the media or his image.

It is even more obvious you do not know what you are talking about, your answer is really ridiculous. I made no reference to his salary and his humanity. I understand motor sports more than most on this forum, having spent years as a photo journalist that got rides in any race car that had room for a second person, around most circuits in North America.

What I do know is that a professional race driver has an obligation to his sponsors and to the public that attends racing. It is a shame that most F1 drivers, being overpaid to begin with, don't have much of a clue when it comes to the reason they are paid as they are. Hamilton is an ass for his self centered comments.

I realize that on some road courses, the g-forces in SOME turns in an F1 car far exceed those of most any other motor sport, except those felt by a drag racer going fron 0-250+MPH. On the other hand, there is no F1 race that provides the drivers with extreme CONSTANT G-forces as does a NASCAR or IRL oval for 500 miles, over three hours, sometimes four. F1 races are usually less than two hours. No F1 driver has ever complained about blacking out, this has happened on more than one occasion in IRL.

Hamilton is a damn prima donna. Blame it on immaturity, whatever, but until he grows up, possibly he should avoid any sport that allows him to run into the rear of a stationary car in the pit lane. Stupid mistakes in auto racing can be dangerous.

He is a prima donna. When it comes down to it, he doesn't get paid to drive a car fast, he gets paid to represent all of the sponsors on his car. That's what F1 is about, that is where all the money comes from.

An F1 driver's detractors will never be happy.

If he says nothing, they will say he has no personality.

If he toes the company line, they will say he is a corporate drone too afraid to speak his mind.

If he speaks his mind, they will dissect what he says and call him an arrogant ******.

As for me, i like that Lewis says whats on his mind. Y'all have to keep in mind you have a herd of pissant runty "journalists" scrabbling to concoct a story out of whatever sound byte they can wring from whatever driver will talk to them, and it's known that Kimi doesn't say much, nor do many at Ferrari. Alonso is always good for a sound byte, as is Ron Dennis, Flavio, Lewis, and others. Of course, so is Timo Glock, but nobody really cares what he has to say anyway. So during his time at the tracks, no doubt Lewis is accosted by these rats/reporters on a minute-ly basis. They say "you look tired Lewis!!!" he replies "Yeah I'm knackered, a lot of heat from you guys, but you'll be back on my side soon!'.

Since he committed the third sin above (speaking his mind), his detractors will read things into his comments that were not there. This is on top of the already embellished statements in the conjured up story that the journo-rat/lackey cooked up and you end up with people being POed at the guy for something 180-degrees removed from what he actually said or meant.

Maybe (gasp!) Lewis isn't being a primadonna. Perhaps he is just genuinely tired after the super-intense support in the media, followed by the super-intense detraction from the same media. And when asked about it, he just was honest and said "yep, I'm tired of it, but you'll be back when I start winning again".

Heaven forbid! An F1 driver speaking his mind??? Someone call Kimi's PR manager and get him to teach Lewis how to handle the press while also endearing yourself to the fans :D

While some of your post maybe true, what do you expect when you start a post like this:
Because in my book, whatever you say next looses all credibility

You want to take a look at the history of your boy Massa , before shouting the odds about stupid mistakes.

I agree with what you say above:).
I personally remember Eddie Irvines attitude towards both the media and his sponsors. At times he used to be late or just never bothered to turn up for interviews. But regarding his attitude towards his sponsors, if they wanted him for say 3 hours for a photo shoot, he used to tell them they only have half an hour:D God i loved that man, i also love personalities in F1 and i recon Lewis brings a breath of fresh air to the sport.
I can only hazard a guess of how the haters would have assessed James Hunt had he raced today;) Girl in one arm and a cigarette/beer in the other. I wonder if he got stick for that back then?

Lewis is the KING of the stupid this year and it started late last year towards his failed finale of a title run. Lewis cannot have it both ways with the media. He insists that he should.

    Wrong.

As Richard Petty once told his son Kyle, when your job is done another mans' begins(talking with the press) standard after each race. Lewis clearly needs to see it the way it is. Lewis has sooooooo much more to learn about the big world.

    Gilles27 put it perfectly above.
