While I am a fan of his driving , Lewis in under the impression that he has become bigger than the sport . Ultimately, he is expendable and if I was MB , multiple world champion or not , I would can his ass for obvious reasons .
One can imagine that once he has fulfilled their goals in terms of titles and GP wins, Lewis Hamilton could be expendable for Daimler-Benz if he becomes an embarrassment to them.
He is becoming an embarrassment. There is no doubt he can drive very well , at the same time he should thank his lucky stars he is driving the best car for the best team and getting paid handsomely. Can’t let the chicken run the coop , MB pretty much made him the wiinnigest driver of all time , don’t **** with the boss
Hamilton is a hell of a driver, but success is going to his head now. Possibly MB is waiting for the numbers to come (92+ GP wins, 7+ titles) and they will reconsider their association then. Hamilton has brought a different audience to the Mercedes brand, but a negative image won't be tolerated, IMO.
i just rewatched the podium ceremony. The only two times I saw Toto was when the British National Anthem was playing (i.e. at that very moment his arms were crossed and his face was covered with a mask, and NO ONE was “jumping up and down” during the playing of the anthem). The only other “Toto podium moment” captured on the telecast is when the camera panned to him (at the moment Lewis was presented with the winner’s trophy), and Toto was clapping (again with the aforementioned mask affixed).
Why so much drama? Hamilton is idiot but not so idiot to make him get sacked. He'll get a slap for the t-shirt thing but that's all. Like many celebrities, he is only an activist as long as it doesn't affect his confortable lifestyle.
[Dailymail.co.uk] Lewis facing investigation for wearing [cough] that t-shirt before and after the MugelloGP.
Because there’s no more suspense. If he were tenth everyone would laugh at him and it would stop immediately.
I love comments like this. So, you KNOW Lewis personally and he told YOU that HE believes he's "bigger than the sport"? He's taking a position on something that he feels is important. I am curious why so many of you find that offensive and think he should be FIRED for stating his stance. It's a bad look for people on this forum (and I'll leave it at that...)
That last phrase is probably why you will never be an F1 team principal. As long as Lewis is winning races and bringing home championships, MB will indulge (assuming they stay in F1 racing). It is up to Lewis when he either jumps ship or drops out. And as long as he is winning and bringing home championships, management will allow.
Bringing personal opinions about politics, social matters, religion or else in the open is always controversial for a sport personlity or an entertainer. They risk to alienate their audience, and reflect badly on their team. Opinions are better kept private. Sport should be a neutral ground, and immune from unhealthy tension, IMO.
It is a risky action to take when in the spotlight, Lewis clearly has the sport's support, as we can see, no need to take it upon himself. OTOH hand, can't expect drivers to please everyone
it's not about the drivers, it's about the drivers who bring politics into sport. Essential difference.
Liberty media has talked to Lewis about his "political message" in the sport of F1 before yesterday's "crossing the line" antic. One of his sponsors even said "he crossed the line" according to the media. Lewis has gone too far.
I am a bit disappointed that the sporting authorities (FIA and Liberty in this instance) allow F1 to be exploited as a platform to expose social problems and expect the public to take a stance. This has no place in sport. This is not what I expect when I switch on my TV to watch a GP.
"Competitors taking part in International Competitions are not allowed to affix to their Automobiles advertising that is political or religious in nature or that is prejudicial to the interests of the FIA” - Article 10.6.2 of the International Sporting Code
