The perfect example is how badly Merc has struggled with tires and how they are figuring it out. If engineers didn't need drivers than they surely would have avoided those issues day 1. Or look at how the teams are always tweaking the car during practice leading up to Qualy and the race. It's largely based on driver feedback. Not to mention the benefit of all the simulator work.
