Since the prior thread got nuked in conjunction with a BobJob's permaban, I thought it would be worthwhile to discuss this widely reported incedent. It seems that LH very nearly collected the MB Safety car in the aftermath of the Timo Glock crash. In light of the fact that the FIA claified the rules for behaviour behind the Safety car due to Hamilton's actions in Fuji last year, it seems that he once again violated them in Germany. Specifically from the 2008 FIA Sporting Regulations:

    40.13
In order to avoid the likelihood of accidents before the safety car returns to the pits, from the point at which
the lights on the car are turned out drivers must proceed at a pace which involves no erratic acceleration
or braking nor any other manoeuvre which is likely to endanger other drivers or impede the restart.

The only footage of this has been removed from Youtube at the request of Formula One Management as always, so I do not know if the lights of the Safety car were out or not, nor do I think LH should be penalized for this "near miss", (if he were I think MB would go ballistic). He won the race on the track where it should be won. At the same time, if there is a violation of the rules as written that is not addressed, it becomes a question of selective enforcement by the FIA. Thoughts?

Clearly Lewis Hamilton must immediately be killed, not only for the good of the sport, but for the good of all mankind.

Firstly, I think you worded the Q pretty well - I don't quite get the "*sigh*. Anyway, my thoughts?

    - F1 rules, "as written" are among the most "flexible" there are - It's pretty much up to Charlie what's OK and what's not. For example, the SpeedTV guys suspected FA was going to be penalized for crossing the (hallowed?) white line - As written, he broke the rules, but where was he meant to go? Ergo, no violation. "Interpretation" is the key it seems.....[Whether that's right or wrong is another Q of course,]

    My 02C,
    Cheers,
    Ian

Unlike being sort of pregnant, the point is he didn't hit the safety car. There is no story, no thread.

C'mon Ron. The conspiracy-thread count is getting dangerously close to single digits. Surely this one must have life.

Lewis' sideburns are a clear infringement of the technical regulations. He should be required to shave them off, and all of the drivers' and constructors' points he has earned thus far this year should be taken away.

I cannot believe that the FIA has allowed this to drag out this long.

Then why have the rule? Did the refueling of HK's car in Germany without the FIA rig while running in qualy result in a fire....No, but there was a fine (of the driver, no less). Aside from Alonso running over the pit out line, as he had little alternative, does running over the line where it result in no crash or impeding of another driver result in a fine or drive through? Yes. Does speeding in the pit lane result in penalty? Almost always. It is not whether it resulted in a crash, but whether it was a violation of the rules as written and enforced.

I have not bright this up to illicit a well informed and thoughtful "sigh", nor to generate any conspiracy, nor recommend bodily harm to LH. This has been an issue with LH in the past and it seems that he has no learned. Maintaining control over your car while behind a safety car seems pretty fundemental to the sport.

And that is exactly what he did.... "Almost" means, as has been noted, nothing happened, no rule breakage, no fines etc. You are correct that crossing the white line (generally) results in a fine, but *almost* crossing it is OK. *Almost* speeding is the same thing.

I understand what you're trying to get at, but this NON incident is the wrong place to "attack" IMHO.

    Cheers,
    Ian
PS - I do however agree that LH should be fined every day those side-burns stay around :D

I neither like or dislike Hami. I think that he is very quick and currently maybe showing signs of maturity before our very eyes, if the last two races are any indication. In the past I have always questioned his maturity level as it relates to winning the WDC. He certainly has the speed and the talent, but he needs to transform that talent into a WDC. Despite all the conspiracy theories over last season, I am of the belief that Hami just plain choked when it was on the line. After being a fan all season of his, I was extremely disappointed that he failed to deliver. Maturity as the reason? I think so.

I don't have a favorite driver and it is easy to jump on the band wagon of any driver who is doing well. I was a big fan of Jenson, but I lost interest in him with what he pulled against Williams by breaking his contract to go to the anemic BAR Honda. Bad career move IMO. I am definitely a Farrari fan first and foremost, but I have always tried to remain objective in my opinions. You and others hear wear your heart on your sleeve and it's easy to know where you are coming from. It's just that sometimes your heart gets in the way of your better judgement. It's not a bad thing, but certainly it results in subjective opinions.

Fair enuff, I can go along with that. ;)

I have never jumped on a LH band wagon, rated him from early on, and you make a good informed point about your reasoning behind it your mindset on him.

However I maybe guilty of getting carried away, due to fact there being, individuals that appear woefully uninformed about this aspect.
