Does anyone know more about this Swiss 512BBi offered by DK Engineering? http://www.dkeng.co.uk/sales/blue-ch...839307%29.aspx The unusual color combo has a definite appeal to me. I am actually in the market for a flat-12 and had more or less set my radar on an F512M. However, the 512BB and 512BBi might be a safer bet, since these beasts have already hit the bottom of the depreciation curve. What's the group's opinion on an injected BB versus a carburated one? Is the BBi as enjoyable to drive as the BB or should I rather shell out the extra cash and go for a 512BB? Thanks for the input! Rik
Back when i was boxer shopping in 2001, I looked at and test drove several BB512 and BB512i examples. I found the BB512i drove better for my purposes; cruising around a couple times a month and the occasional group mountain ride with other Ferrari owners. The BB512i is more tractable and user friendly on the road.
You are right. Something went wrong in the copy-paste operation. Here is the correct link: http://www.dkeng.co.uk/sales/blue-chip--competition-cars/ferrari-512-bbi-for-sale-%2839307%29.aspx
So how much are they asking for that one? Whether to go for a BB or a BBi would be a matter oppinion. As parker points out, the BBi is probably a little easier to drive around town as it has a little more low end torgue for starting off. However, once you get her rolling, driving a BB is absolutely glorious! The carbs give instantanious throttle response as well as a wonderful induction wail that adds a tantilizing note to the engine sounds that an injected car can't match. Plus, overall, the carbed cars are faster than the injected brothers, not to mention that the engines just look better topped with Webber carbs as opposed to the simple runner pipes of the injection. I do not know. I will give them a call when they open tomorrow. They do have a rock solid reputation, that's for sure.
Hope you fellas use condoms, lol! No argument on the sound of carbs, when they are in tune they sound like nothing else. I ran with a BB up a local road starting from sub max speed limit speeds. I have to tell you that the carb sound behind me at increasing distance was very sweet. I am sure David would surmise that the carbs weren't running right... The BB is a compromise one way, the BBi another. Both brilliant. I have to say the biggest knock against the BBi in my mind isn't what most here might bring up. It is the metric wheels that allow for one tire/size unless you go to the substantial expense and trouble to find a standard wheel. In my experience, the BBi on modern rubber vs the TRX's is night and day. Can't speak to what the BB guys are running for tires, but there are other choices superior to XWX's that preserve the original look. I'd be curious to know.
A very fair valuation on the Swiss car........IMO Will they send it to Texas??? No way you'll find many cloth interiors still looking like that (unrestored) after this many years, that's a time capsule example... FULDA (Goodyear) makes some good tires in the smaller rim diameters, they stock me with 14"s that are V rated... BBs have a shorter final drive gear ratio making them quicker off the line, it's not based upon carbs vs. injection, I don't think, it's physics........
William, Despite all the pissing matches on which one is a "better" car, your statement really accurately describes both animals. After riding in and driving your car, they truly are just too different to really compare. In the same breath, there's just no way that I have the overall driveability that your car possesses. In a perfect world, I'd pick.....both on them to own.
When I was test driving BB512i and BB512i I too felt the BB512i was faster. At least the BB512i felt faster. And with an old car, perception is everything as I will never race the thing anyway.
Rik, Are you on the Euro side, or here in the US? Tex, I think the final gear ratios are the other way around, and also the long runners on the injected cars give them more low end torgue off the line,,,, So I guess that just leaves the BB with; "The carbs give instantanious throttle response as well as a wonderful induction wail that adds a tantilizing note to the engine sounds that an injected car can't match.",,, but I don't actually know for sure either, as none of the guys I know that own a BBi will give me a ride!!! Although I do know for an absolute fact that the carbs look better than those phony looking injector pipes,,,, but then again, that might just be a matter of opinion! John
David knows, and I hope everyone else does also, that the ribbing is all in good fun as far as I'm concerned. Pointing out the pros/cons/idiosyncrasies in threads like this are interesting both to owners and prospective owners alike. John points out the different looks under the boot between the BB and BBi variants. I personally love the intake runners of the BBi, they still attract many comments. BB's usually have the airboxes over the carbs, which I find unfortunate since the carb look is something special and it is a shame to have to cover them. There is a local BB owner who has his boxes removed, and the carbs topped with intake trumpets covered with screens just looks racy. Love it! It must sound even better with those exposed carbs. Unless you are driving through a dust storm, is there any danger to the engine not running air filters? I suppose every road car under the sun has them for a reason, but BB's sure look good w/o them. Of course, there are many non-stock ways to enhance the intake look, some more subtle than others.. To address the car the of the OP, I think that it is definitely worth exploring if it were me. Of course it's all in good fun! Whether a BB or a BBi, it's still a Boxer, with no need to apoligize for either one!,,,,,, Although I'm not so sure about those 365's,,,,, Just Kidding! Time to review that fine looking enhanced intake that William posted! John
Privided you get it in writing the price really does include all the EU taxes paid I'd say that is a very attractive price. But as someone else said, something amiss with the dash panel. Image Unavailable, Please Login
That red interior looks amazing. What's the rest of the car look like? Please post some photos -- looks like a show stopper. (So does the blonde on the F-1 car.)
If you DO run open trumpets on the carbs there's foam filter socks that slip over them to avoid injesting a road pebble... *cough.. choke*
