I am in the process of acquiring a 412. I am concerned with the variation in rules when importing a car from one state to another. Specifically, bringing a 412 into Nevada.
I tried to make sense of the rules the DMV uses and the more I read, the more confused I got.
I would like to know who has imported, I mean from one state to another, a 412 or any of the 365/400/412 series cars into Nevada recently. What issues were faced, and how can the process be streamlined to minimize expense and delay.
The issues I'm concerned about are emissions, safety equipment, EPA mandated upgrades. Things like, but not limited to, lights, exhaust parts, certificates, inspection documentation, and structural changes. How do I know if any of this is currently a requirement in Nevada, and what other tips should I be aware of to keep my "import" under the regulatory radar.

The cars are over 25 years old so all of that stuff should go out the window unless you're bringing into California. They require emissions all the way back to 1976.

I brought my F355 in from Maryland to Henderson, NV. Nevada does not require a safety inspection. The only thing you need is a VIN inspection, emission certificate, title, and proof of insurance.
Any police officer can inspect the VIN and sign off on it or you can trailer the car to the DMV on American Pacific.
Nevada requires emission inspections on anything produced since 1968.

The emissions dance as I called it when I lived there is an annual affair and they no longer show you what your car blew so you have no idea how close it was/wasn't to passing. It's a pass/fail, and if you fail they won't tell you what was too high! Nevada's emission standards for your year aren't as tough as California but it's a laughable process now so I highly recommend getting it to someone like Italy Service so they can at least check if it will pass or tune it so it will pass. For years I used to do a special jet/timing tune on the carbs to get my 308 to pass then hobble the car home and retune it so it would run how it was supposed to run. What a laugh.

Years ago I emailed a state senator about how laughable and ludicrous the process was for classic car owners and actually received a reply advising he would like to take that legislation to the state but I never heard back nor did anything ever change.

I heard the grumblings of a federal emissions law a couple years ago so we will see if that happens.

That was one of my concerns. I can't figure out what standard Nevada is using. Federal 1985 or something else. Is this one of those bring it in and cross your fingers deals? That's a big crap shoot considering finding someone that will smog a 412, other than an outrageous dealer, is another concern. Who did your smog?

If you are not going to use the car as a daily driver you can get Classic Plates for it and you don't have to smog it, but you are limited for mileage and I am not sure about the year models but you can check it out on the Nevada DMV web site. I have My 365 GTC/4 and My 365GT4 2+2 licensed that way here in Las Vegas.

Sorry to hijack this thread but please compare and contrast the GTC4 and GT4 2+2.
Sounds like a high school assignment! LOL

Thank you very much. I found the type of plate that allows exemption of emissions test. It is a "Classic Vehicle" plate. The car must be a model year more than 25 years old and the owner must prove an exemption based on less than 5000 miles driven the previous year. I still don't know if this gets me out of the inspection for the first year as I can't certify that the car was driven less than 5000 miles in the previous year. At least it limits my testing to once. I just won't be driving 5000 miles or more.
I now have to find out what smog equipment an 85' 412 would have for federal certification. Anyone have an idea what the 412's had, other than in California?

I believe that The 5000 mile limit applies after the car enters Nevada registry.....not how many miles it was driven elsewhere.....Marc

wasn't aware Nevada became its own country ?

Custom's has a registry of RI = who did the conversion when and who did it. Start with these 2 places GNK - costa mesa ca. Baltimore Technologies who is a full RI and importer. No its not a state issue what your after but what you need to know if you were importing from a foreign country its exempt, however California and some states go back to the FVMSS was started in 1966 and its a up to Sacramento DMV to say what passes and does not. SO to be in the clear talk with those 2 places mentioned and start from there.

The two cars are identical except for the exterior body and the extra length to accommodate the rear seats adds some weight, but other than that they are the same car.
You can't tell the difference between the two cars when you are driving.
Anyone wanting a 12 cylinder Enzo car should drive one of each. The only real difference in the two cars is the body style and the $200,000.00 extra cost for the 365GTC/4.
There is a world of difference between the 365GT4 2+2 and the 400 2+2s, and if you drive both of them you will see what I mean.

..and I'm amazed at the prices these days of the 365 GTC/4. Back a few years ago, they were "sort of" on my stretch list--meaning that I'd need to push to $80,000 at least to get one.

Looking at the prices now is just nuts. $250-350,000 all day long......
I think they are one of the best looking vintage Ferraris around--even better looking then the Daytona to be honest. And I hear that engine (as well the 365 GT4 2+2) is the best sounding of all the Colombo V12s.
