So i decided to brush up on my life drawing skills.

A local gallery is a hosting 3hr class on Wednesday night for only $10 and i went for it last week for the first time in almost 20 years.
Worked feverishly at this during my college years as it was always my weakest class. Others had this in high school as a full course - i had it for 2 weeks, so i was starting out behind everyone else....

brought back memories... going again tonight so i hope for some improvement as some of the techniques come back to me...

    conte or charcoal on newsprint
starts with 1 and 2 minute poses for "gesture drawings" (pic 1 & 2)
then longer 20 or 30 minute poses for more complete studies with some tonal rendering. (pics 3-6)

Way to keep the skills sharpened. I've thought about going back and taking a few refresher courses myself!

For being gone 20 years, looks like you haven't lost the touch. Nice work, and I don't think those will break any rules around here.

During college and in-between years, I spent a lot of time in life and other fine arts classes. Its been around 30 years since the last one. I've wondered how long it would take to get up to speed again.

My classes were structured the same way: first 1/4 hr. doing quick gesture drawings with a huge ink brush or other non-precise marker, then moving on into poses.

    Thanks.

    Went again last night.
Its a 3 hour class, and i feels like 20 minutes. Time just flies.
Its funny.. the one minute poses finish, youre struggling to complete and you think: aaaarrrg.. just 30 more seconds.
Then later, the 2 minute pose ends and AGAIN, youre struggling to finish and you think: aaaarrrg... just 30 more seconds...
But they do what they are intended for ... they get you loosened up and get you "seeing" the necessities... proportion (my weakness), movement, gesture
The 20 or 30 minute poses allow for alot more attention to accuracy, correction and shading.

Strangely, i felt my results were better last week... Had some bad luck with poses - a lot of back views.. i'll post some tonight...

Those last ones are really well done...I can sse a big improvement between the first and second class sessions.

Encouraging...maybe I ought to try art again. Seems like it comes back after many years

    Keep up the good work.

Grant, very nice, I especially like the line weight variations and accents on your last three drawings.

Grant...adding to my earlier comments: I've never seen your profile page before, looked at it last night.

That is some very fine automotive art. The way you've positioned the images and used the whole work spaces gives well-rendered realism a strong simultaneous abstraction...they're not over-rendered images in the middle of a page or canvas, with lots of empty space around them.

Going now to look at your website.

Grant, thanks for posting these up. It reminds me of classes I took in college. Your posts here might push me back into it.

thankyou! Wow... thanks for taking a look. I appreciate it.
The use of line weights was drilled into us back in class (2 3-hour classes every week). Overlapping forms, tension point... Funny how some of that comes back when you return to it. We were fortunate to have incredible instructors.

wow, your intrepretation is really accurate! That is so thrilling when how and what i am trying to portray gets across to people. I love photography as well and the closeups i take of these beautiful cars - whether its the exterior bodywork, the interior, or the engine (Ferrari makes it all beautiful) - fuel the paintings. The balance between artistic interpretation and the realism that auto enthusiasts demand can be exciting/challenging/annoying all at the same time :)
Glad you enjoyed the work and thank you for posting!
FYI - a little bit larger images are here:

thanks... i plan to continue going (although this Wed i might have to skip due to a late meeting at work) so i'll keep y'all posted on my progress...

From your description of your training, it was pretty much the same as mine. Basic text was Kimon Nicolaides, Drawing with the Right(?)Side of the Brain (whichever side governs spontaneity, I forget.)

My first and second best all-round profs out of five years of college were drawing instructors, at Southern Methodist U. and a Dallas Community College. These guys really had a passion for art, and transmitted it.

Now I wish I hadn't chucked them all afew years back. 25 years and bugs do take a toll.

As far as line weights, rendering, etc., that wasn’t stressed so much, even in advanced classes. Those things were seen by my SMU prof as a natural by-product rather than something taught. My drawings tended to be structural, analytical, and open ended, rather than finished and rendered, which I guess is not surprising considering the profession I followed.

Some of your paintings are a bit Rorschach-reminiscent, at least to me…but I’m a bit red-green colorblind. Take that as a compliment, BTW.

    I'll check it out.

Your fourth week's work looks good.
