Driving home from Palm Beach Motorcars today after having the 7500 mile service on my Lotus Elise, I had a close call that took my breath away and set my heart pounding in my chest. A number of things including some luck saved me from a potentially nasty crash.

I was northbound on I-95. I'm in lane #2 (of 4) counting from the right side. Moderate rush-hour traffic, as it was only 3:45pm. My lane was clear for 50 yards ahead of me. Suddenly, an SUV in the right lane, about 20 yards in front of me swerves to miss an object in the middle of his lane. I don't know what it was, but it was fairly large. I didn't see it but briefly... it sort of looked like a plastic bumper. Anyway, this SUV makes a sudden and severe swerve. The result was a loss of control and a series of "fish-tails"... into my lane!! At the same time, this idiot hits his brakes... worsening the fish-tails, and forcing me to get on the brakes. I couldn't believe he didn't roll the SUV. He (or she) got close to doing it. While braking, I'm aware of the traffic behind me moving at about 70+ mph. As many of you know, the Elise will stop QUICK... quicker than mere mortal cars, and that can be a curse in fast-moving rush hour traffic. I can avoid rear-ending someone, but I worry about the guy behind me! I'm thinking, I'm going to get crushed. I'm thinking... "oh crap... this is going to be a chain reaction crash, and I'm going to be in the middle of it." A quick (almost sub-conscious) glance into my Multi-vex driver's side mirror, got off the brakes, and I nailed the throttle and moved to the lane to the left. Fortunately, nobody was there. When I say I missed hitting the SUV (still wagging its tail) by an inch, I mean a LITERAL INCH! In fact, when I made the evasive move, I was expecting an impact. I thought, "this is it!" I came through without a scratch. I don't know what became of the SUV or the other cars nearby. I didn't have a chance to look... I still had visions of my life flashing before my eyes.

My exit was only about a half-mile later. When I pulled off, my heart was pounding, and I was breathing as if I had just run a 100-yard dash. I regained my composure (somewhat) at the red light at the end of the offramp. Ever since I got home, I have been reliving this near crash. I've had some "close ones" before, but this was as scared as I have ever been.

The point of mentioning the Multi-vex mirror isn't meant as a "subtle" advertisment or endorsement. But, I will tell you that it probably saved my ass. With them, there are no blind spots in the Elise. Adjusted properly, I have continuous rearward vision between my rearview to my side mirrors and then into my peripheral vision.

Additionally, I strongly believe that my training in racing schools and HPDEs has conditioned me to have an increased situational awareness. I feel it's especially imperative in a car like the Elise that other drivers "don't see." I won't even play the radio in my Elise. I feel I need to give 101% of my attention to the task of driving it effectively and safely. High-performance conditioning enabled me to react instinctively and in a fraction of a second.

Lastly, I believe the incredible handling properties of the Elise allowed me to make a VERY quick lane change and remain in control.

It may be my imagination (but I doubt it), but the number of grossly incompetent and distracted drivers is increasing at an alarming rate. Folks simply don't know how to drive!! Rather than running over debris in their lane, these idiots see fit to endanger EVERYONE AROUND THEM instead! Gawd forbid they run over something and damage a tire or scratch their bumper. No.. instead... let's take everyone with me!! aaaaaaargh!

we can only hope; the fact is, people need to get where they need to go, no matter how much it costs or how much money they make. People aren't going to call into work because they cant afford gas.

I just think that the test for a license should be much more difficult, involving evasive manuevers, reaction time, etc. and drivers should be tested upon each renewal of their license. Living in the desert, there are far too many 90 year old drivers out there who have absolutely no business on the road.

This'll never work, however, because the DMV is packed enough as it is.

Wow, that is a close call. Glad that you made it out alright.

I remember a few weeks back, there was a sofa cushion laying on the right lane, a few hundred feet from the onramp and incoming drivers would swerve to avoid it.

The Elise is a very small car.

Much like a motorcycle he may not have even seen you.

Keep you lights on in a car that small. I had this problem in my MR2's regularly. So low and small they don't even register in people periferal(sp) vision as another motorist, hence they don't "see" it. This is doubley true in emergency situations.

Get used to this if you plan on keeping the Elise. It won't be the last time someone doesn't "see" your car. You'll have to drive more offensively. Keep the car moving as to make people notice you. Stay out of blind spots. Change lanes, when safe, regularly(people will register the side to side movement in their mirrors better).

This was not an issue of not seeing me. This was an SUV that suddenly forced his vehicle out of control by trying to avoid debris in the road. In doing so, his car fishtailed into my lane.

Otherwise, you are correct. The Elise is like a motorcycle, and I have had folks try to change lanes into me. But, in this case, he wasn't changing lanes. He just went out of control and happened to skid right in front of me.

This thread lacks emo music. Something like taps set to honkey rap with a phase or two of thumping techno.

That would make this thread more interesting.

You could have worked this out even more... your best friend was killed by the suv in a twist of fate of some sort. The night before your wedding. The day after his pet got spade. Something like that.

If yer having a hard time with SUVs while driving a Lotus, you got problems. The least of which are the SUVs and other vehicles on the road. Your primary concern should be why you are a male being prescribed Vagisil, and why you think a near miss on the highway warrants its own emoblog on a forum devoted to Ferraris, and why you think we care about your gushgasm gheygasm life affirming near death experince with an SUV.

    But.

    Whatever.

You want ghey, korr? How's this: Eat me!

And, BTW, genius... Pets get spayed... not "spade." There are too many other grammatical and spelling errors in your post to take the time to correct. You are obviously a mental giant. At least you spelled Vagisil correctly. I can only surmise that you are quite familiar with that product.

    Korr,
Sir with all due respect I have to say that was the most classless comment I have ever read on Ferrarichat. The man had a near brush with death and all you could do was insult him in your post. His post brings up many valid points, and it was much more informative and "devoted to Ferraris," than your "Star War Kid Settles!!" thread. As many people have said you have full right not to read the threads if you don't want to.

Glad you're OK! I know how that can feel:

Scary moment #1: My wife and I were driving home from Milwaukee, she's in the passenger seat holding our new puppy (couple years ago). A truck on the left kicks something into the air, a flat, square something or other about 6 inches across. It's spinning and gyroscoping in the air and heads right for us. Turns out it's a quarter-inch thick chunk of steel and it hits our windshield about 2 inches below the roof line, right in front of my wife. It cracked the entire windshield, left an impact in the glass and dented the roof. A couple inches lower and it would have come through and killed her.

Scar moment #2: Riding with my buddy down to Indy on I-65 when a truck drover over a delaminated tire tread, throwing it up into the air. The tread cleared the 2 cars in front of us and nailed my buddies car. Messed it up pretty good, but what was really scary was the motorcycle rider in the left lane who, had he been in our lane, would be dead.

Jack, I no longer drive my sports cars -- unless absolutely necessary -- on four lane/six lane highways. And I try hard to keep off these roads with my family. Gravel trucks without covers spewing rocks from above, semis out of control blasting debris from underneath, cars driven by idiots (some of whom are drunk or incompetent or both!) weaving in and out of traffic, following too close, or going too fast or too slow -- and you have a created a breeding ground for injury to person and property.

It does seem as if drivers are more incompetent than ever, and getting worse.

Thanks. I was a bit surprised at "korr's" response. I'm not on this board enough to be familiar with all the "characters," but I will look forward to the next time korr decides to regale us with his intellectual prowess and brainy musings. ;)

I have been a Ferrari fan since age 13. I plan on owning one. Ultimately, I am a CAR enthusiast, and that's why I joined this forum. I thought my experience would be of some interest to the folks here as fellow car / driving enthusiasts. The type of car is virtually irrelevant.
