A few years ago I was ridding high, great job lot's of cash coming so much cash that I started visiting various dealers Ferrari dealers in the hopes of buying a nice Testarossa I loved that car an still do. Well a buddy called me with a great idea; his idea was for me to join this great new start-up company that played in the new emerging voice over/IP multi-media call centers. The offer was great huge base salary, 20,000 stock options and that there was an excellent chances are we would be bought by Cisco in a year or so. Well reality hit no one in Canada wanted anything to do with a product/solution in the $3 to $5 million-price range and especially from a new start-up company. Next bad news Intel one of the major investors decides to stop funding the company. My buddy and I get toasted and that was the end of the dream of the Testarossa and the beginning of the nightmare. Well it did not stop there I found almost impossible to find another decent paying job in the Toronto area. Things got even worse I lost another job due to a company leaving the Canadian marketplace. The only job offer I had was from a Subaru car dealer. I am now selling cars at straight commission. I guess the good news is it can't get any worse or can it?

Racist loser is a good place to start. Hey Rolm, have you ever considered you got to where you are because you are a racist loser and everyone can see it? Can you say Karma?

    Hey Rolm,
I understand. I worked for ten years starting as a Computer operator and moving up to Software Engineer and finally Project manager for an Internet company in Texas. We were making huge money. I had 30,000 stock options and we were soon to IPO. Then 2000 was slow and 2001 we went bust! I couldn’t find a job and the jobs available were low paying and we had to change our lifestyle.

I decided to take our meager savings and start a construction company. 4 years later we are doing better than we could have ever imagined. I have built over 20 homes in the last 4 years and have had a wonderful time with the flexible schedule. We have two children now and I am able to spend time with them throughout the day instead of sitting in a cubicle.

Chin up! Life is what you make of it! Good luck!

Yeah, but with his new resume, he should be able to gloss over the racist and the loser part and land a fine new job.

Too bad South Africa turned the corner a few years ago. That would have been the perfect place for Rolm to troll for a new job, instead of here.

    Well, here goes one...

Earlier this year, I got stuck in Canada for 7 months with an immigration problem 3 days after finding out my wife was pregnant. I obviously didn't have the income from my lucrative tutoring job which was paying our car payments and then some. My wife but had to stay in the US to work to pay our bills, I missed a semester of law school but still paid more than 5 figures in debt on it (the deal was my wife wouldn't be kicked out of our student housing apartment if I paid partial tuition on the semester), and I missed my summer law internship and spent most of the summer selling kitchen knives.

There I was, pregnant wife 470 miles away with the due date moving a lot faster than INS, the only Harvard fricking Law School student spending his time trying to peddle damn cutlery to poor Canadians so his wife could cover the interest our growing credit card debt as we went from 2 to 5 cards. Day after day. Winter. Spring. Summer.

But with a lot of faith and prayers, support from friends - many from here on Ferrarichat - and writing some of the right people, I got home 6 days before my son was born, and this has been the best 4 months of my life to end off what was easily the worst year of my life. But I was always careful to say that I was grateful to have those problems and not terminal health problems or issues with the baby (our good friends here lost their girl last year after premie birth). Count your bloody lucky stars you weren't on a SE Asian coast!

BTW Rolm, you'd better shape up and watch your mouth around here. Remember what you said about proofreading? You'd better try harder, because you're offending a lot of people.

Just like somebody always has it better, someone inevitably has it worse. With internet access, I think you fall into the former catagory.

Ryan, I dug ditches at one time to get myself home.. I would've jumped at the chance to sell knives. Just look at it as a character-building experience. ;)

I had to sell my kidneys once -both of them- to make ends meet. Now I have a large FRAM oil filter in place of them, and it works amazingly well.

An ex-girlfriend bought herself a BMW 325 as a college graduation present, but the job market in her particular area was crap. She wound up working at the same dealership she bought the car from. She was pretty depressed having to work selling cars, but that feeling wore off once she realized that it was a good job that paid her 3x what she would have made in her chosen field.

Actually the sales experience helped me revive some old skills and made me realize I had to be working towards a goal - so I stopped selling knives and started writing business plans.

I just realized that I was in a back-asswards situation and needed to get out.. Subsequently broke it off with my then-wife once I got back home.

    It's all relative.

I'm now about to launch my own business and have a great woman who actually cares about me- the ex-wife is expecting her third kid @ 23 and barely making the mortgage on her *cough*mobile estate *cough*.

Reap what you sow; I'm just glad that all of the appropriate paperwork is signed and filed.

And Rolm, if you're going to re-hash the dot-com days, please go somewhere else.

    LOL!

Here's your new friend ....a shovel!

Fall in with Manuel Labor over there.........

Life IS fair you see, every one reaches their level of competancy, some even go one or two levels PAST that.........

The dot com bust is an excellent case study of what is called 'fluidity of labor'. The short version is:

"Your job just went to India, you'd better run after it......"

It's all relative.....If you look up you must also look down....

I have a friend who took a gamble on his business and invested in it...It worked out, he expanded, he lived in area where real estate 3x so his house has just paid itself off and his office went from 200K to 600K in 18 months...He is making good money, has TONS of freedom, nice stuff, is fairly young and healthy and is basically living his dream w/ no end in sight!!

On other hand, this past summer another friend of mine just got married, finished college and landed a killer job....He was a great guy and hand TONS of friends and was extremly happy.....He was babysitting for a friend one night when the guy had to work overtime until about 3am...After the guy arrived home my friend left on his Harley with his new wife on back and headed back home in a usual manner.....While traveling down the road a drunk, uninsured, ******* ran a red light a blasted them, and then continued on....His new, excited, wonderful wife may never walk again......And my friend will never have the chance to see if they ever catch this guy....He is dead....He was 26.....

Your attitude is the only thing you are truly in control of in your life....Make it one you can enjoy.....You are lucky to even have the opportunity to do that...Every time you think of what you don't have spend equal time and energy thinking of what you do have..

Guys thanks for the replies hey some were excellent and some were tasteless. Hey like some of you said life is what you make it.

Now the good news even though I am still in training and not allowed to approach any of our customers in our show room. Luck had it that I was the only sales rep on the floor the other sales rep were all tied-up. A customer walked upto me and asked if I could assist him in choosing an appropriate car for his wife. Her birthday is this Saturday and he wanted the car delivered on saturday. In a few hours I had my 1st sale and earned a commission of $1250. Hey there just may be money in this gig and the good news is I truly enjoy been around cars and it is an interesting experience selling to the public. Things are looking-up and you just never know what if a guy drives up in a Ferrari and wants to trade it in for??? Now that would be something to look forward to. Toronto dudes if you are in the market for a Subaru drop-in for a chat.
