There is a company in northern CA that will repair your assembly. They did a very nice job on mine. Check out oddparts.net
Many thanks Mar3kl for your guidance. Fortunately, I have had mine repaired a long time ago (this thread is 6 years old ;-) and have had many fantastic miles since. This is from last weekend. However, I really appreciate it, and am sure others will benefit from the many tips in this thread. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Oh man it was a while back. They recast the plastic end piece with better material, refinished the stalk, replaced some of the rotating knob internals. Looked beautiful when they were done, and works great. They are an interesting shop - they do a lot of repair and refinishing of obscure parts - electrical, vacuum, stuff like that. They rebuilt my voltage regulator and replaced it with solid state internals earlier this year.
They did the same for my '72 GTC/4 light and signal switch gear this spring when an electrical problem popped up - turning on lights caused the fuel gauge to jump to FULL! The internals had been repaired some time in the past in a ham-fisted way and as has been said, plastic parts had deteriorated Not only did they rehabilitate the internals and refinish the stalks using from the stash of parts they have amassed over the years, they also added a metal plate they developed on top of the rotating internals making them more robust. An added bonus was a youtube video of them testing the repairs.
O.D.D. Parts in Sonoma CA has been doing them a long time, mostly for the restoration industry. I have a 330GTC switch here waiting to be sent to them. They'll fix plastic, electrical and rechrome the levers. Good guys, been using them for years.
